Geneva Cardinals To Open Season At Home Friday Against Owls

By Bob Shraluka The Geneva Cardinals, a potentially powerful club, are the only Adams county team that hasn’t yet ventured into —the 1963-64 basketball wars, but the Cardinals will remedy' that situation Friday night when they play host to the Bryant Owls. Under new head coach Jerry Augsburger, the Cardinals could be a dominating force in Adams county this season with six returning lettermen, plus three lettermen from two other schools. Augsburger, who will never be forgotten for that memorable Decatur-Hartford Center game in the 1953 sectional, returns to his home county this year, taking over the *reins from Harry Anderson. On hand to greet the youthful coach were nine boys wearing letters from the previous season, including the talented Mike Newcomer, Adams county’s top scorer last year. County’s Top The 5-10%, 152-pound' speedster sailed 449 points through the nets last year in 16 games, for an outstanding 28.1 per game average, one of the highest averages in Adams county history. Beginning his senior year, Newcomer will find defenses keyed for him,- but will still be hard to keep under 20 to 25 points a game. Newcomer’s running mate at guard last year, 5-7, 155-pound senior Roger Lautzenhiser, also returns. Lautzenhiser was the floor general of the club last year, and” will probably assume that role again this season, plus scoring some points along the way. Back too from last year is the big fellow, 6-4, 185-pound senior Bob McCabe, plus 5-10, 158-pound Jerry Buckingham, 6-2, 145pound John Binegar, a junior, and Ron Bollenbacher, 6-1, 176pound junior. Big Factor If McCabe has grown out of some of the awkwardness that troubled him last season, he could be a big factor in a great season for Geneva. Bollenbacher and Buckingham showed flashes of brilliance in spot duty last season, and will be battling for starting berths or adding depth to the bench. Bollenbacher has shown he is a good rebounder and with Mc-

Cabe could give the Cards agood 1-2 punch off the backboards. But the six lads with the “G’s” aren’t the only good news for Augsburger, who has two “H” lettermen and a “P” letterman. The “H” is for Hartford Center, from where Jerry Alberson and Jim Meshberger hove sojourned to Geneva. Alberson, a 5-9, 150-pound senior, was a starter and top scorer for the now-defunct % Gorillas last season, and should be a asset to the Cardinal lineup. Meshberger is a 6-2%, 155pound junior, who saw plenty of duty with Hartford last season, and will give Augsburger plenty of flexibility in his starting lineup. The other “foreign letterman is The other “foreign” letterman is Stan Eellenberger, a 6-1%, 172Poling high school in Jay county last season and has transferred to Geneva. An unknown source around the county, EUenberger has size and is reported to be fitting right into the Cardinal scheme of things. -> Also listed on the Cardinal roster are Calvin Hill, 6-1, 216pound senior; Doug Bixler, 5-10, 150-pound junior; and Jim Brubaker, a 5-7, 150-pound sophomore. ’ • , " 45 Candidates Augsburger had about 45 candidates out when practice started, and the first of this month reported, “We should have a pretty fair ball team, providing the boys jell as a unit—but at this time we have a long way to. go. Newcomer, Lautzenhiser, McCabe, Alberson and Ellenberger have all scored well in the past and will continue to do so, I hope, along with help from sev-. er al other good boys.” “With boys like McCabe, Meshberger, Bollenbacher and Ellenberger under the boards,” the new coach went on, “we should be able to hold our own in the rebounding department.” He also added at that time, “as of now I have no idea who the started will be, but nine or 10 boys seem to be capable of making the starting unit, and this should provide a healthy, competitive atmosphere. “Attitude, desire and hustle of the individual will be the determining factor,” he concluded. Geneva’s assistant coach this

Illini Coach Is Injured In. Drills Monday By United Press International The five-day delay in playing the Big Ten title game between Michigan State and Illinois is - helping injured players get back into playing condition—but Illini coach Pete Elliott Monday became a casualty of the delay. Elliott will be on the sidelines at East Lansing with a cast on his leg for the Thanksgiving Day showdown. Elliott suffered a torn ligament during practice when reserve back Les Fewquay knocked the coach to the ground. Doctors said the leg would have to be placed in a cast. Spartan Coach Duffy Daugherty, who held a secret workout, said the extra days should help injured guard Mike Currie, back Lou Bobich and center Don Ross get ready for the showdown. Elliott, who sent Illinois through a defensive workout, said tackles Archie .Sutton and Brian Duniec, injured against Wisconsin, were expected to play Thursday. Minnesota held no workout Monday but coach Murray Warmath promised a hard drill' ( Tuesday in preparation for the Thanksgiving morning game with Wisconsin. OVEREATING „ CAUSE GAS? INDIGESTION?
