Wells Liquor Board Grants Beer Permit The Wells county liquor board, after battling with the Christian businessman’s association and the Bluffton News-Banner over the legality of tape-recording its procedures, Monday voted unanimously to renew a beer permit for Joe’s Tavern in Bluffton.

The board at . first contended .that permission to record could be granted only by the Indianapolis office of tlje alcoholic beverage commission. The News-Banner and the Christian businessmen stood on a 1959 law which permits such recordings regardless of whether the ABC gives its approval.
The board retired for two “executive sessions” to decide the matter. ‘.‘Executive” meetings of public bodies on public matters are illegal under a 1953 Indiana Taw. Board member Rem Johnston said the private conference was justified because the public “isn’t capble of understanding the issue.
