United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Without benefit of a crystal ball, here is the current Indiana political situation, seven months before the state conventions of the Democratic and Republican parties: —Lt. Gov. Richard 0. Ristine remains the front runner for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, but may be challenged by Robert Gates, son of former Gov. Ralph F. Gates, or by two members of the faction led by former Sen. William E. Jenner— Secretary of State Charles 1 O. Hendricks and-or Stefte< Treasurer Robert Hughes, or possibly, by Col. Roscoe Turner,' world famous speed pilot. —State Sen. D. Russell Bontrager, Elkhart, is likely to announce for the Republican senatorial nomination any day now. Possible rivals — although only remotely so—are three Hoosier congressmen — E. Ross Adair, Fort Wayne; Donald C. Bruce, Indianapolis, and RictihrcF L. Roudebush, ‘Noblesville. Former State Chairman Thomas Gallmeyer. Fort Wayne, likewise is a possibility. —Appellate Court Judge John M. Ryan, Indianapolis, this week became the second Republican to announce fOr lieutenantgovernor. The first was Russell Stott, Edinburg. Democrats Are Active —Sen. Vance so far is
free from rivalry for renomination, despite the coolness of Governor Welsh, and may remain in that happy state, according to all indications. —Announcement of Roger D. Branigin, Lafayette attorney and former president of the Indiana State Bar Association, for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination is expected momentarily. He’ll be a tough candidate. —Two Democrats have announced formally for governor. They are former Bloomington Mayor Thomas Lemon and Rep. Robert L. Rock, Anderson, his party’s floor leader in the, 1963 Legislature. —Other possible entrants include State Sen. Marshall Kizer, Plymouth; Clinton Green, secretary-treasurer of the Indiana Port Commission; State Adj. Gen. John S. Anderson; Merton Stanley, chairman of the Public Service Commission; Phillip L. Bayt, Democratic member of that body and former Indianapolis mayor; James C. Courtney, state revenue commissioner Donald E. Foltz, state conservation director, and Jack L. New, the governor’s executive secretary. Governor’s Decision All hands are awaiting action by Welsh, who has announced he will pick a favorite early next year and will expect all members of the potent Statehouse patronage machine to plug for his choice. Another ukase of Welsh—that he will force the resignations of any state officials when they announce for governor—is likely to delay future announcements. President Kennedy is expected

to enter Indiana’s presidential primary, if only to forestall the pledging of Indiana’s first ballot voting to a possible splinter candidate. Because of the popularity of Sen. Barry M.Goldwater in Hoosierdom, he likewise is likely to become a presidential primary entrant. Whether Gov. Neilson feller will follow suit is uncertain in view of the frosty attitude of Hoosier party chiefs when he spoke in French Lick last month.

Americans Eating More Turkeys Now
YORK (UPl)—One of the things that changes little in this age of moon rockets and missiles is popularity of the Thanksgiving turkey. It’s more in demand today than ever before. -4rade sources say. Americans are now eating about seven pounds of turkey per person each year, up from the two pounds a quarter of a century ago.- According to statisticians who keep track of the gobblers, there were about 93 million live birds raised this year—a half million more than 1962. However, one thing has changed. Most turkeys sold today are frozen. The shopper •looking for a fresh bird may have quite a hunt and wind up paying extra for it. For the most, part, shoppers will find the holiday turkey prices at about the same level as last year. If the choice is a large bird, over 18 pounds, the price per pound will be lower than that of a small bird, according to the New York Cooperative Extension Service. Many consumers say they prefer a hen rather than a tom turkey. The chief difference between them is size. A tom will weigh a few pounds more than the hen of the same age and breed, but, there is very little difference in tenderness and flavor. Turkey is a rich source of protein. A three ounce serving of cooked turkey provides about 30 per cent of the protein recommended daily for a normally active person. And what Is turkey without cranberries? This year America will harvest the second largest cranberry crop on record, the largest ever produced was that of 1960. But production in Massachusetts, being the largest cran-

berry state, and New Jersey will fall below that of last year. However, Wisconsin, Washington and Oregon are expected to increase their production from the previous year. Although local harvest will be down, market analyses indicate that berries* are of good sizes. Cool temperatures have given local berries color this year and improved thgir keeping qualities.

Modern Etiquette By Roberta Lee . 0 0 Q. We have a friend who makes a habit of dropping in on us just before mealtime. Are we obligated to ask her to join us? A. If you really do not want her to stay, you are in perfect right to say, “I’m sorry we can't ask you to stay for dinner, but we have only four chops" — or whatever fits the situation. Q. My parents»are planning an engagement party for me. Should my fiance present my ring to me at this party, or beforehand? A. This is a personal matter — one of the biggest moments in a couple’s Ufa — and your

fiance should present you with your ring when you are alone, before the party. Q. Would It be all right for me to ask my best friend, rather than my sister, to serve as my maid-of-honor — and my sister to serve as a bridesmaid? A. This is your privilege. Remember though, in choosing your friend, you are implying that she is “closer to you” than your sister, especially if their ages are nearly the same. Q. Should garage attendants or service station attendants be tipped? A. Only if some special service has been performed outside of what is regularly charged for.
