CATHOLIC WOMEN TO ATTEND DEANERY MEET Local Catholic women will attend a meeting of the Huntington deanery council women at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 17 at Nix settlement. The program will open with benediction at St. Catherine's church with the meeting following immediately in the parish hall. Featured on the program will be a talk by Mrs. Robert Marshall, of LaOtto, chairman of the committee cooperating with the confraternity of Christian doctrine of the Fort Wayne-South Bend diocesan council of Catholic women Mrs. Marshall will explain all the phases and aspects of this committee on the parish level. Conducting the meeting will be Mrs. Paul Kastner, of Huntington, deanery council president. Also attending will be the Rev. Lawrence A. Gollner, pastor of SS. Peter & i Paul church, Hunt- _ ington, and moderator of the deanery council. The Huntington deanery council of Catholic women draws membership from catholic parishes in Wabash, Lagro, North Manchester, Churubursco, Columbia City, Huntington, Roanoke, Nix settlement, Bluffton, Decatur and Geneva. The arrangements for the meeting are being handled by Mrs. Clarence Hine, St. Catherine’s parish chairmen for the deanery council of Catholic Women and the Rosary sodality of that parish. VERA CRUZ SCHOOL PTA HOLDS MEETING The November parent-teacher meeting at Vera Cruz opportunity school was opened with devotions by Rev. Carl Brookshire, of the Bryant church. Accordion selections were played by Tom Fiechter. A film, “Give Them a Chance,” showing a typical day in a public school special education class, was viewed. Russell Huffman, properties and equipment committee chairman reported that the floors at the school had been painted recently. Lunch was served at the Bluffton Jaycees turkey shoot November 9 and also will be served at the Bluffton Rotary club turkey shoot November 23 by the ways and means committee. Another new student brought the total enrollment to 41. Program books were given out. It was reported that the footing for the new multi-purpose building

Elmer Isch, is co-chairman from Adams county. “Open House” will be held at the school Sunday, November 17, 1 to 5 p.m. Mrs. Max Fosnaugh, representative of the school, Mrs. Hermine Colson, Harold Johnson, Wells county mental health association, and Dr. and Mrs. Galen C. Huffman, recently attended a regional meeting at Kendallville Os the joint committee on mental health of the Indiana state medical association. The purpose of the meeting was to bring leaders of the medical association, the retarded childrens association, the mental health association, and some general hospital leadership together to learn about the Indiana state mental health planning commission, its needs for recruits for its regional committees. National retarded children’s week will be observed this month, with committee in charge: Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Fiechter, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Burk, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Millington. December 6 chalk pictures will be drawn by Mrs. Raymond Harrison, Adams county. The pictures are titled ‘"Die Shepherds.” The Nu-U club will meet at 1323 West Monroe street, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Tillman Gehrig will be hostess to the So-Cha-Rea for dessert bridge, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Evangeline Circle of the Zion United Church of Christ will meet at the home of Mrs. James Tumbleson, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. MISS CAROL WABLE HONORED WITH SHOWER Miss Carol Wable, bride-elect of Jack Butler, was honored with a miscellaneous bridal shower Friday evening given by Mrs. James Elliott and Mrs. Larry Caffee at the latter’s home. Upon arrival the bride-to-be was presented with a corsage of yellow mums. Games were played and the prizes won were in turn presented to the guest of honor. The gift table was decorated with an umbrella and a miniature bride and groom. Refreshments of cake, ice cream, punch, mints and nuts were served to the honored guest and the Mesdames Roy Wable, Alvin Buchanan, Kenneth Bieberich, Dwight Brunner, Steve Irwin, Jack Ladd, Mike McGill, Sherman Archer, Robert Bailey, Wayne Riley and ihe Misses Lori Ann Buchanan, Becky Ladd, Bonnie Cook, Judy Butler, Susan McCullough, Mary Geisler, and Master Jeffery Caffee. Unable to attend but sending gifts were Mrs. Hubert Butler, and Mrs. Mark Rutledge. The W. S. C. S. Circles of the Methodist church will meet at the church at 11 a.m. A lunch will be served at noon and at 1:30 p.m. a program will begin, to which all Adams county W. S. C. C. members are invited. Mabel Michaels, returning missionary frofn Africa, will speak and show pictures of her work.
PLANS NEARING COMPLETION FOR STYLE SHOW Final touches are being made by all the committees for the annual style show and bazaar which the Rosary Altar society of the St. Mary’s Catholic church will present Thursday evening at 8:15, in the D. C. H. S. auditorium. Die theme of the style show will be “Fall Fantasy” and will be narrated by Mrs. Maurice Colchin, with Mrs. William Gass providing organ music. Die stores taking part are Jani Lyn, Gass’, Teen Togs, Kiddie Shop, and Niblick’s. Tickets are available at any of these stores or may be purchased at the door. Refreshments will be served. The bazaar will open at 6:30 p.m. and will feature many ideal Christmas gifts such as pillow cases, towels, doll clothes, novelities, etc. Anyone wishing to donate to this may bring their articles to the school, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. or call any of the various officers. Mrs. Charles Buckley is chairman of the show, with Mrs. John Boch as co-chairman. In charge of the bazaar booths are Mrs. Al Scheiner and Mrs. William Kohne. Mrs. Ireaneus Gase and Mrs. Joseph Schultz are in charge of refreshments, and the Misses Mary C. and Rosmary Spangler, Rose and Anna Nesswald will handle the receipts. The St. Judge Study club is responsible for the decorations and Robert Laurent will handle the properties. The committee in charge of the tickets consists of the Mesdames William Kohne, Harry Massonnee, Arthur Lengerich, William Lose, Jr., Gerald Gage, Julius Baker, Donald Gage, Robert Eiting, Ernest Fullenkamp, Joseph Murphy, Anselm Hackman, Jr., and Edward Faurote. The W. M. S. of the Pleasant Mills Baptist church will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Paul McCullough.
Die Ladies Aid of the St. Paul's Lutheran church, Preble, is sponsoring a chicken and ham supper, Sunday. Serving will begin at 4 p.m., with a bake sale scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. The Profit and Pleasure Home Demonstration club will meet at the home of Mrs. Roman Brite, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Roman Brite will be hostess to the Our Lady of Lourdes Study club at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Thursday afternoon the Mary-Martha Circle will meet at 2 o’clock in the home of Mrs. Ed Hagan. The Bible study will be given by Mrs. John Magley. The program for all Circles will be a book review given by Mrs. R. C. Hersh. Births Wendell and Deanne Capes, Mishawaka, are the parents of a 5 lb., 14 oz. baby girl named Tammy Lyn born Saturday at the Memorial hospital in South Bend. Mrs. Capes, a former Decatur resident, is in room 609. At the Adams county memorial hospital: Saturday at 8:06 p.m., a 7 lb., 6 oz. baby boy was born to Jerry and Carolyn Fry, 133 North Bth street. Maurice and Rosanne Godde Miller, 321 Jackson street, are the parents of a 9 lb., % ox. baby boy born today at 7:40 a.m.

AMERICAN LEGION AUX. HOLDS BUSINESS MEETING The monthly business meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary unit 43 was held Friday evening at the Legion home. The meeting was called to order by the president, Waneta Walchle. The chairman of each department, child welfare, veterahs crafts, mental health, publicity, and juniors, gave a report- in addition to the secretary and treasurer’s reports, which were read and approved. The rehabilitation chairman, Zelma Roop, reported on the gift shop to be held at the Veterans hospital December 3,4, and 5. AU members wishing to donate to this project are to contact Mrs. Roop. Waneta Walchle and Mabel Liniger than gave reports on the presi- . dent and secretary’s conference to be held at the war memorial in Indianapolis November 19 and 20. It was announced that the Christmas party will be held December 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Legion home. It will be pot-luck and there will be a $1 gift exchange. Mrs. Francis Bohnke offered prayer beginning the memorial service for two deceased auxiliary members. Miss Rose Steigmier and Mrs. Pauline Smith. The president, Waneta Walchle, delivered a short eulogy intribute to the departed members. “Under its authority, years of devoted service was given by these devoted members. They contributed much to its significance. Their service is not ended but as a result of their loyal efforts will go on for our American Legion Auxiliary and for God and country which the auxiliary serves.” This concluded the memorial service. The history of the hymn of the month, “My Prayer” by P. P. Bliss, was given by the music chairman, Mrs. Frank Crist. The hymn, “I Need Thee Every Hour,” was sung by the members. The colors were retired and the meeting adjourned. Girl Scouts Troop 39 Troop 39 of Southeast school held a fly up and rededication ceremony recently. The meeting was opened with the pledge of allegiance and singing of “America.” The fifth grade girls welcomed the fifteen Brownies into their circle during the candelight ceremony. We said the Girl Scout promise and laws together. We served refreshments to parents and girls. Rear-End Collision Damages Vehicles A rear-end collision at 11:30 a. m. , Sunday on highway 33, 5.5 miles east of Decatur, caused $875 damage to the two vehicles involved. A car driven by Iloa Hamrick, 58, route 3, Willshire, 0., rammed the rear of a car turning left into the John King residence. Both cars were headed southeast, the turning car being driven by Terry L. King, 23. His car suffered approximately $75 damages to the rear fender and bumper. The Hamrick vehicle veered to the right, and tore up a section of the King fence and fence posts. Damage to the car wgs estimated at SBOO, as the front bumper, grill, left front fender, rear bumper, radiator etc., were damaged. Deputy sheriff Warren Knetiss and state trooper Dan Kwasneski investigated.
John Custer Winner In County Contest John Custer, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Burdette Custer, won the county elimination in the American Lggion oratory contest Friday at Decatur high school. Custer was named winner over the only other contestant. Miss Nellie Campbell, daughter of Mrs. Bertha Campbell, route 3, Decatur. Custer, a halfback on this year’s Decatur Yellow Jackets football squad gave his talk, entitled “Our Constitution —A Document For The Ages.” It was the same speech which he gave in winning the Decatur high school elimination to qualify for the county contest. Next Monday he will give the talk atthe_ district, eliminationcontest at Auburn. He will also be required to give an extemporaneous talk on some constitutional subject. Fourth District Os Legion Tops Drive The fourth district, American Legjpn, has again won first place in state membership drive, according to an announcement by James Zoll, of Bluffton, district commander. In the drive, this district, which includes Adams county, turned in 10.163 members for 1964, gaining 48,781 points. Frank Detter. Decatur, is the district's membership chairman. In the district, 25 of 32 posts exceeded their membership quotas.

Locals David B. Heller, advertising manager of the Decatur Daily Democrat, has returned to work for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon on a twoweek trial basis, following an August heart attack. Lawrence Morgan, former railroad worker from Decatur, has .been admitted to the Hillings nursing home. Centerville, where he would be very glad to hear from his Decatur friends, according to a letter he wrote this past week to his brother, Charles Morgan in Decatur. Veterans Services Held Here By Legion Veterans day memorial services were conducted this morning at the American Legion home by-’ Legion officers and members. Prist commander Ed Kirchner conducted the and Rev. Otto C. Busse, a retired army chaplin, gave a short talk on the significance and meaning of Veterans day. Kirchner read the traditional' Veterans day invocation, which cited the sacrifices and gallantry of America’s servicemen and women. The flag was flown at half-mast during the ceremonies. A color guard was in attendance and a firing squad, headed by Wendell Macklin, fired a salute in memory of American servicemen killed ,n action Tmn Baxter played ‘‘Taps." i -■■■■ Louis Smitley In Serious Condition Louis Smitley, of route 3. Democratic precinct committeeman for for St. Mary’s township, is reported 'in serious condition with pneumonia following brain tumor surgery at Lutheran hospital. Fort Wayne last Thursday. He was consc’ous following the operation with no apparent paralysis. Smitley is employed by Stratoflex, Inc., at Babs Field. Fort Wayne, and. his wife, Joanne, is deputycounty recorder.
