Veteran’s Day Was Formerly Armistice
by Sgt. Bert Crosby (Air Force Recruiter) What is now known as Veterans’ Day was originally called Armistice Day in honor of those who served in World War I. which ended in an armistice Nov. 11, 1918. It was during this war that First Lieutenant Edward V. Rickehbacker became the first United States airman wearing silver wings to receive the medal of honor. This is the centennial of the medal of honor, as, we know it today, and the 50th anniversary of the coveted silver wings of the Air Force. The first military wings were awarded to Captain Charles DeF. Chandler Oct. 6, 1913. The medal of honor is the highest award for heroism in military action this nation can bestow upon a member of the armed forces. Forty-sewn men who have earned silver wings have received the medal of honor. Four- earned it in World War I; 38 in World War II; and four in the Korean War.

By a special act of congress, Capt. Charles A. Lindbergh was awarded the medal between wars. Seventeen lived through the ordeals for which they were awarded the medal. . Rickenbacker, then a member of the 94th aero squadron, Air Service, was cited “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy near Billy-, France, Sept. 25. 1918. "While on a voluntary patrol over enemy lines, Lt. Rickenbncker attacked seven enemy planes (five, type Fokker, protecting two type Halberstadt.) He was cited for action near Murvaux. France, Sept. 29. 1918: “After having previously destroy«d a number of enemy aircraft within 17 days, he voluntarily started on a patrol after German observation balloons. Though pursued- by eight German planes which were protecting the enemy balloon line, he unhesitatingly attacked and shot down in flames three German balloons, being himself under heavy fire from ground batteries and the hostile planes. Severely wounded, ho descended to within 50 meters of the ground, and flying at this low altitude near the town of Murvaux opened fire upon enemy troops, killing six and wounding as manymore Forced to make a landing and surroundixi on all sides by thi enemy, who called upon him. to surrender, he drew his automatic pistol and defended himself gallantly until he fell dead from a wound in the chest."
