Mayor Donald Gage Seeks Second Term F A*' jfll < M Donald F. Gage Mayor Donald F. Gage announced today that he is a candidate for a second term as mayor of Decatur. In announcing for reelection. Mayor Gage stated that he is proud of the improvements that have been made during his administration, but even more proud that the light plant sale money has not been “squandered." and that there still remains on hand practically the* same amount (over $1,200,000) as the net proceeds of the sale. Gage explained that the city improvements have been made through the interest received from investing the principal. Hie Republican mayor said, “I am proud to have been a part of planning and constructing the new water lines, new sewers, new water towers, fire trucks, fire station building, new improved street--lights, ;£nd the-additions - and improvements to equipment of the various departments. “However,” he explained, "I want to emphasize that these additions were made possible by the complete* cooperation of the city council, clerk-treasurer and department heads. “I want to publicly thank the elected and appointed officials for their many hours of devoted work to make our town a better place to live,” the mayor continued. i Elected To Council Gage was elected a city councilman in 1951 and served four years as a councilman and a member of the board of public works and safety, under the ~late Mayor John M. Doan. In 1959 Gage woma x “squeaker” over Robert D. Cole, winning the mayor's race by four votes. Served With Marines Gage served in the Marine Corps as a non-commissioned of- ’• ficer during World War 11, being with-tthe third amphibian branch of the Marines in the Pacific theater. He is a member of the American Legion, V. F. W. and Knights of Columbus. Gage, who formerly was a machinist with the local General Elettric, is a partner in the Gage Tool & Machint* Shop, located at 11th and Dayton Sts. in Decatur. The mayor is married to the former Mary Jane Fritzinger, and is a member of the St. Mary's Catholic church. Mayor and Mrs. Gage reside in their home at 1057 Park View drive.
Decatur Lady Files For Council Post A** Mrs. John Spaulding Mrs. Winifred Spaulding, wife of Dr. John B. Spaulding, Decatur dentist, announced this morning that she is a candidate for the nomination of city councilman-at-large, subject to the Republican primary election May 7. Mrs. Spaulding is believed to be the first woman candidate for a position with the city' council Veteran political observers could not remember any previous election in which a woman was a candidate for the city council. Mrs. Mary K. Morgan was defeated in the Democratic primary for the mayor’s nomination in 1959. She was the first female candidate for mayor. Files Wednesday The well-konwn Decatur lady broke precendent late Wednesday afternoon, when she filed her candidacy for the Republican nomination for the at-large post, currently held by Bernard Clark. Mrs. Spaulding received an A.B. degree from Indiana University •where she-was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi social sorority. While at Indiana University, she served as secretary of the Young Republicans club. Cub Leader She is a member of the First Presbyterian church in Dcactur, and is in the women’s association of the church .Mrs. Spaulding is' a member of the local Tri and is quite active in youth activities. She is an assistant Cub Scout leader. The Spauldrhgs reside at 633 Mercer Ave., where they own their own home, and have two sons, JPotiglas and Joe, and a daughter, Rachel. Mrs. Iloe Burke is the only woman who can be remembered who served on the local city council. Mrs. Burke, however, was appointed to fill the unexpired term of her husband, Adrian, when he was called into service during World War 11.. - ' ,

Gerald Strickler Council Nominee Gerald Strickler ■ ** • . ’ ’ The Republican central committee met at the courthouse Thurs-, day evening for the purpose of* filling the vacancy of councilman, third district, and also to reaffirm the city organization officers... Gerald G. Strickler, 1056 Winchester. street, was selected as nominee for Councilman third district on the republican ticket. He ‘ will oppose Harold Miller, Democrat, in the fall election. Strickler is a graduate of the Decatur high school, where he was active in athletics. He served 26 years as a referee, and during that time officiated two state finals, 12 semis, and 18 regionals. Also, Strickler was among a group of American referees to officiate the Central American Tournament at Costa Ricd‘ and also the following year in El Salvador. Strickler liaSbeen a real estate broker for 20 years, and is also an auctioneer. ' He and his wife, the former Evelyn Kohls, attend the First Christian church, where Strickler serves as chairman of the board of trustees and is also an elder. Strickler is a 32 nd degree Mason, a member of the Elks, realtars board, and also on the board of the Decatur Booster club. Mr. and Mrs. Strickler are the parents of three daughters. A son, Tom, was killed in an automobile accident a few years ago. At the organizational meeting for the city campaign, Herman Lankenau was named chairman, Mrs. John M Doan, vice chairman, and Robert S. Anderson, secretary-treasurer, They were all hold-o ver officers. —

(Don) Mac Lean, retired from the Central Soya in Decatur where he served as vice president, announced this morning that he -is a Republican candidate for the nomination of city councilman from the fourth district. Developer of the Decatur Golf course. Mac Lean is thesecond Republican to file a candidacy for a position on the local city council. Clarence Ziner filed Saturday. Mac Lean retired from the Central Soya plant here in 1960, where hewas vice president and general traffic manager. He had spent 22 years with the Central Soya company. A member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Mac Lean developed and operated the local golf courser-after-it -was -built in 1947, for ten years. Zoning Member He is a member of the zoning board of appeals and is treasurer of the Decatur Girl Scouts shelter house committee. A past president of the Adams county Shrine club, Mac Lean is a member of the Decatur Masonic lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Mizpah Shrine. In addition, he is an honorary life member of the traffic club of Chicago and a member of the Fort Wayne Transportation club. He and his wife, Lillian, reside at 333 Kemper Lane. The MacLeans have two sons, Don, Jr., a graduate student at Indiana University, Bloomington and David, a commercial photographer whose office is located in the Med-Dent building on S. Second St.

(Chijck) Stonestreet, a resident of 844 Mercer Ave., filed his candidacy late Thursday afternoon, the final day for filing, for -city councilman from the second district, subject to the Republican primary election. _. A veteran of the Korean War, Stonestreet was the last candidate to file, submitting his declaration Thursday afternoon in the Adams county clerk’s office. Stonestreet served four years with the First Marine Division, serving in both Korea and Japan. He was in the battle of Inchon in September of 1950, and was awarded a total of seven battle stars. A member of the Scottish Rite and the Masonic lodge. Stonestreet is the scoutmaster of the Liore club Boy Scout troop 62. He, is a member of the Lions club in Decatur. He is a member of the Methodist church, and teaches a Sunday School class of sixth graders. L. L. Manager He has been connected with the Decatur Little League for a number of years, and presently is manager of the Red Sox team in the youngster’s league. , Stonestreet has been employed by the Erie railroad for the past ten years, and is presently working in the cast of characters for “The Music Man” production (which is the reason for the mustache.) He is married to the former Thais Bumgerdner, and the couple have two children, Mike and Ann.

Ziner, owner of the Culligan Water Conditioning sales and service, Third and Madison streets, announced this morning that he will be a candidate for city councilman from the first district, subject to the Republican primary election May 7. Ziner filed his candidacy in the county clerk’s office this morning for the city council post. Democrat Carl Gerber is presently serving as city councilman from the first district. Quite active in civic affairs, Ziner has served as president of the Decatur Chambew of Commerce; as a director of the Chamber of Commerce; as president of the Northeastern Indaina soft water association; and as secretary of the same association. Rotary President He is a past president of the Dedistrict governor of district 654 district governor of district 654,\ covering the northern one-third of Indiana, of the Rotary. He also served as a director of the Decatur Rotary club, and as group representative of district 654. Presently serving as district chairman of the Adams county Boy Scouts, and as an executive board member of the Anthony Wayne Scout council, Ziner was a member of the board of directors of the American Red Cross. Ziner is now serving as chairman of the good roads committee for the Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Indiana motor truck association and the international soft water association. Zoning Chairman He was one of a group that gathered plans and made preparations for the city planning commission and the zoning ordinance two years before its adoption, and served as chairman of the board of zoning appeals through its inception in 1949 until 1957. The well-known local man also served as county chairman of the scrap rubber drive for this couqty under the civilian defense program during World War 11. He is a member of the First Presbyterian church and served as trustee, deacon and two terms as elder, and at present is president of the men’s council. He is also a member of the Masonic lodge of Decatur, the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite, the Miispah Shrine in Fort Wayne, and the Elks lodge in Decatur. Ziner and his wife, Miriam, reside in their own home at 416 W. Adams St.
