Miller, of Indianapolis, co-chairman of the joint commission on church union of the Evangelical United Brethren and the Methodist Church, has reported a plan, adopted in September, for the two church groups to complete their vote on merger by 1968. The new church will be the United Methodist Church. While nationally the Methodist church has 10,234,968 communicants and the EUB’s 761,754 here in Adams county there ate more EUB’s than Methodists. Both have quite similar Wesleyan backgrounds, but the EUB churches come from German language backgrounds, and the Methodist from English. Practically everything would be the same if the two churches do unite, and each gives ground a little to the few technical differences. Under the new proposal, bishops would be elected for life; at present, EUB bishops are elected every four years, but in practice they are generally reelected for life. The bishop would appoint the district superintendents, subject to approval by the conference. Methodist bishops now appoint without approval, and EUB’s elect their district superintendents. A council on ecumenical affairs in the new church would declare and work for the Church Universal. ....... - ' . ■■■■■. a This is a very sound proposal. The task facing the > Protestant churches of America today is great, and Christian unity with understanding and Christian love are the only solutions. Bigness will solve nothing in itself, but it will allow better solutions than small churches. The effectiveness of united churches has been proven time and again in mission area overseas. Local churches have much to grain from merger, even though minor problems are presented. Think of the religious education program for children, the weakest link in the Protestant chain, and think what it would mean to have groups of children large enough for good church school programs. Why, a ~ merger of tfie First Methodist Church and Decatur EUB church would provide a school unit almost large enough to form a separate school district under Indiana state law! Think of the choir possibilities, of a special minister for sermons, and speaking, and one especially for calling on the sick and those in need of help. A dynamic Protestant chrch with a real program for its members would certainly challenge the rest of us in Decatur! Editorial written by Dick Heller

NIPSCO Pays Out $8 Million In Tax Northern Indiana Public Service company has contributed more than eight million dollars this year in real estate and personal property taxes to the successful operation of Indiana's cities, schools, towns and counties, Dean H. Mitchell, NIPSCO chairman and president, announced today. The utility's November installment of $4,150,602.55, added to the spring payment of $4,152,445.24, brings the company’s total state and local property tax bill for 1963 to $8,303,047.79. "This makes NIPSCO one of the largest taxpayers in the state of Indiana," Mitchell said. “Just as with every other taxpaying company in America, these tax dollars are collected from customers as a part of their service bill, In fact, last year 18 cents out of every dollar received from NIPSCO customers went for federal, state and local taxes.” i Richard M. Reetz, Decatur district manager, said that total local taxes paid by the utility in Adams county amounted to $27,734.72, of which $21,894.34 went to the city of Decatur. Tax payment checks have been sent to NIPSCO district managers well ahead of the November 4 deadline to make sure county treasurers received them in plenty of time. Oh. That Aching Back!
