Basketball To Take Over In State Friday By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS UJPI) -High school basketball, Indiana’s annual five-star production, gets under way this weekend with the smallest field in 40 years but also one of the strongest. As usual, schools too small to field football teams are the first to tip off for the new campaign, and it will be another month before all the city teams will be in action. 1; Two of the three unbeatens in the last j state tourney are among the early starters Friday —Eminence and Loogootee. Eminence lost 7 of 10 boys who compiled a 21-game winning streak before bowing to Bloomington in the sectional tourney. The Eels open at home against Cloverdale. Loogootee, also a 21-game winner but minus sharp - shooting Junior Gee, opens at Shawswick. Bloomfield Loaded Columbus, which took the state’s No. 1 rating into the last state tourney, piled up a 25game winning streak before being cut down by eventual champ Muncie Central in the semistate, 79-70. The Bulldogs, still winding up the football campaign, won’t try their hardwood luck until Nov. 22, against North Veron. Muncie, which cashed in on a record fifth state title, also opens Nov. 22 against Hartford City. Bloomfield may be the top “little big shot” quintet in action this weekend. Coach Guy Glover’s crew, opening Friday against neighboring Eastern, includes four starters from last year’s team .that compiled a 20-4 record, losing to Terre Haute Garfield in the regional title round. Garfield later upset defending state champ Evansville Bosse and gained the state finals. .Monroe City, like Bloomfield a former Wabash Valley tourney champion, opens at Winslow and Silver Creek against Henryville in other better Friday night games. Many New Names The IHSAA lists a total regular membership of 599 for the 1963-64 school year, but only 598 teams are expected for the next state tourney since the Indiana Blind School does not par-, tcipate. Last year’s state tourney field numbered 639. Sixteen schools have been discontinued since last year and 43 other states figured in consolidations, a move expected to result in many stronger teams. Among the new names to memorize are Cass at Logansport, Eastside at Butler, Monroe Central at Parker, Mount Vernon at Fortville,‘North White at Monon, Oregon - Davis at Hamlet. Pioneer at Royal Center, Shakamak aT Jasonville, Triton at Bourbon, West Washington at Campbellsburg, and White River at Patoka. The only major' rules change will result in longer games. This year, every time the whistle blows, the clock stops. How much time that will add to a 32-minute game depends on the type of contest it is, but one educated guess was the change will add from 3 to 10 minutes.
