Promise Prior To Operation Brings Career By HORTENSE MYERS United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — A promise made prior to a hazardous heart operation has led to a new career in religious communications for Mrs. Margar- ■ et Frakes. «, <• \Mrs. Frakes, newly named di- / ctor of field operations for the Educational Communication Association. Washington, D. C., lives in Plainfield and works in Indianapolis. She is a native of Salem, but she and herhusnd. Fred, \a construction engineer, lived \in Illinois before returning to her native state. Her career is\ one she describes as trying to show “people caught up in everyday living that the Bible that has become so secondary in so many lives is relevant to. them today.” ' \ The ECA, a national independent organization established originally by a grant from Lilly\ Endowment, Inc., Indianapolis,. develops mass media programs. \ Aim of the programs, most of which have been in television, "is to close the gap between our technical and scientific advance and our spiritual and moral development.” Death Without Surgery The aim became the chief motive for Mrs. Frakes as the result of her survival from a hazardous operation performed to delay the progress of a heart ailment which doctors said would mean death without surgery. i "I said to the Lord, if He could use me in His Kingdom’s work, let me live, and I lived,” she explained. After her recover cry from the operation, performed at the Chicago Presbyterian Hospital, Mrs. Frakes joined the staff of famed evangelist Billy Graham, working both in Indianapolis and Wash- - ington. »*. '■ In her now job, she will be in charge of a regional office here and will work in the presentation of several television courses which already have . been d.eveloi>ed and in developing other educational and religious programs in TV, radio and published media. Mrs, Frakes explained that four Bible telecouraes, for which college credit is given, are being presented, or have been presented, in numerous cities. In addition, an educational film, "Focus on World Affairs,” also has been developed by ECA, Translated Into French All the courses are taught by Dr. Edward W. Bauman, American University, in Washington. The “Focus bn World Affairs” is the first to be translated into a foreign language—French. Mrs. Frakes explained that the format of the courses, in which students in Bauman's classes join in unrehearsed questions, has produced a flood of mail containing other questions. “This is teaching, not preaching," she said. “If anyone takes I the time to write, they get an answer.” Mrs. Frakes still is limited in her activities by her heart Condition, but finds she has time for both her job and her family. In addition to* her husband, this includes a 13 - year -old daughter, Karleen, and another daughter, Mrs. Warren Parsons, who lives in Bloomington.
