The Decatur Daily Democrat will welcome its third comic strip Monday, and it will be somewhat different from those we have run previously. The new strip, “Buenos Dias” is the story of a Mexican burro —in Spanish! The English translation will be found below the strip in very small letters — you may need a magnifying glass to see them. But the characters in the comic will speak Spanish, and it will be very easy to learn or recall your Spanish by reading this strip. Many people here in Decatur already speak Spanish, and have a Spanish heritage and tradition that runs back many, many years. Others wish to learn it — to converse with friends, to enjoy travel, for added business opportunities, for intellectual achievement —for many reasons. The people of every country south of us, except Brazil, speak Spanish as their native language. If we wish this to be one hemisphere, and for the people in it to look to us for leadership and cooperative enterprises, we will just have to “speak their language.” The idiom is really quite meaningful. Learning to speak English and Spanish helps fight Communism in a very constructive way— it will make it possible for you to understand the problems of South America, Central America, and Mexico. Their problems are our problems, hut only if we can converse freely can we really understand each other. , “Is it possible for me to learn a second language? I could barely learn ‘school’ English!” Certainly! Almost all people in Europe speak several languages; so do many in Africa, Asia, and Oceania. English and Spanish are both similar to Latin, and therefore have many common words that look almost the same. You will be able to guess the meaning of many of the words used. Many Decatur children have already had a year of Spanish in grade school. They will be able to continue their Spanish, and enjoy a comic strip at the same time. Why don’t you try to read it, too?
