50-Yard Line Flashes By Bob Shraluka Hazelwood, Hazelwood, Hazelwood! And the sweetest victory of the season. Bluffton and Auburn* are old rivals. It’s nite to beat Portland, a Garrett, a New Haven, or any of the others on the schedule. But when you beat Concordia — it’s the sweetest taste of victory you can get. Os the nine teams on the schedule, this corner would rather see a win over Concordia than over any of the other eight. It gives the old towel-chewer another week to complain of injuries, bad breaks, etc. Hazelwood was the name of the game last night, as no other one player has been more solely responsible for a victory th?s season than “Big Daddy’’ Hazelwood was last night. He was great all the way last night, but when he smashed over two (that is right, two) blockers to let that punt bounce off his chest, he was at his greatest. You really can’t blame the two kids who tried te block him out on that kick, because it iy very unlikely they had ever seen a human locomotive before that play. This was certainly not one of Decatur’s better games, but who cares when you win. The Jackets had several breaks and numerous scoring chances, butjthey Although the offence was sputtering for the first time in a long while, the defense, led by Hazelwood and Manny Ybarra, was simply great. Known as a good offensive club, the Cadets were held to only 107 yards rushing last night, and a mere 47 in the second half. The Cadets chalked up only six first downs and just eight yards on four passes, as that rugged Decatur defense rang up its third shutout of the season. Actually, Concordia never made a serious threat to score. Manny Ybarra, who with Hazelwood gives Decatur its own “Mutt and Jeff,’’ also deserves a lot of credit for the showing of the defense. The smallest guy on the field, Jake entered the fray in the second period and sparked the club immediately and through out the rest of the game, as he was constantly in the Concordia backfield. ‘ As one observer remarked, “I was beginning to think he was a Concordia halfback.” Jerry Egly also did an outstand-

Wildcats Hold Secret Drills For Spartans By United Press International Northwestern held a secret workout Wednesday aimed at stopping the attack of Michigan State in their Big Ten clash Saturday. However at East Lansing the Michigan State Spartans indicated they’d have something new in store for the Wildcats. The Spartans experimented with razzle - dazzle plays as having quarterback Steve Juday hand off to a halfback, get the ball handed back, then throw a pass. MSU also tried some plays ing job, as he covered the field like a blanket. Twice he caused fumbles that Decatur recovered with bone-shaking tackles. And of course, one of the big plays of the night was made by big Johnny Eichenauer who stopped that fourth down run cold as the Cadets were trying to get 4*ck tn the ball game. '‘'’Sambo Blythe did a fine job filling in for Buster Melchi, and the big sophomore gained 55 yards rushing in 14 carries, second only to Max Elliott’s 66 yards in 12 carries. Max, bothered by leg injuries, was run less often last night to save the legs, due to the fine job done by Blythe. And thanks goes out from this corner to the entire team and the coaches — thanks for ruining a 4-4-1 prediction. The Jackets have now won five, the most since 1956-57, but here’s hoping they don't quite now. There is one left, and a big one it is. Angola is one of the better teams in the conference and last night beat Kendallville ■in the Comets’ home territory. These Jackets have a chance to do something that has been done only twice since the 1943 unbeaten season, and that is win six ball games. It will take a great effort, another great team effort. It would be great to end a great season on a winning note. It can be done — let’s go, go Yellow Jackets!
from the shotgun formation. Minnesota and Michigan both ran through hard drills in preparation for their Little Brown Jug battle this week. The Gophers worked on blocking and on ways of stopping the passes of Michigarf quarterback Bob Timberlake. Timberlake, who was promoted to the MU first string after a standout performance against Purdue last week, ran the Wolverine attack in Wednesday’s practice. Wisconsin reported that safety man Ron Frain, who injured a shoulder Oct. 12, may play in the vital Ohio State game Saturday. OSU, undefeated but tied in the conference, held another secret workout Wednesday. Coach Woody Hayes said the defense looked good, but he was having difficulty getting the right man at the right halfback post. At Indiana, Coach Phil Dickens said his Hoosiers were in about the worst physical shape ever. Dickens said so many players missed practice because of injuries it was difficult to form playing units. Purdue worked on blocking assignments and offensive tactics with Ron Digravio calling the signals. Backs John Kuzniewski, Gordon. Teter, Gene Donaldson and Dick Daych performed most of , the running chores. Illinois completed its drills at Champaign for Friday night’s game, at UCLA, but cdach Pete Elliott said thefe’d be a workout in California Friday. Notre Dame brushed up on offensive and defensive patterns in ending their workouts before leaving for Stanford today. Pro Basketball Wednesday’s Results Baltimore 115, New York 106. Decatur Yellow Jackets Score 7-0 Victory Over Concordia Wednesday
By Bob Shraluka Decatur’s vaunted Yellow Jackets accomplished something that hasn't been done in many a season Wednesday, as they shut out the Fort Wayne Concordia Cadets by a 7-0 score at Zollner Stadium. A fourth period touchdown by Sam Blythe, set up by a tremendous performance by big Steve Hazelwood, was the game’s only score, and as it turned out the only one needed by the Yellow Jackets. The victory assured the Jackets of a better than .500 season, as they now stand at 5-3 with one game to play, and own a conference mark of 4-3. A blocked punt by Hazelwood and Blythe’s touchdown brought the Decaturites from the depths of despair and lifted them to their* first win over a Cadet eleven in many, many years. After the two clubs battled to a scoreless tie in the first half in which Decatur wasted three good scoring chances, the tempo of the contest picked up midway in the third period. Decatur started from its own 35 after the second half kickoff and after a pass from Dave Anspaugh to Greg Ladd picked up 21 yards, the Jackets marched deep into Cadet territory. Waste Chance On a fourth and one situation from the Concordia 35, Sam Blythe, who filled in for the injured Buster Melchi and was one of the top rushers, blasted off tackle and gained 13 yards to the Concordia 22. The Cadets gained possession on the next play, however, as Tom Wilcoxson recovered a fumble. The Cadets could gain only eight yards in three cracks at a tremendous Decatur defense, and were forced to punt. The kick was short and rolled out of bounds on the Decatur 44. - Max Elliott picked up eight yards off right tackle and when his teammates saw him punched by mi opponent, it seemed to fire tton ug. Mighty Max carried four times ror’29 yards an<J Sam Blythe four times for 14 more, and the Jackets had a first down on the Concordia five-yard line. Sam got one yard off tackle, Anspaugh one on a left end keeper run and Bill Blythe two more off tackle. With fourth down and a yard to go, Anspaugh dove through the line at left guard and appeared to be over, but the referees ruled he hadn’t made it—killing the Decatur threat with a heartbreaking climax. Blocks Punt But Hazelwood brought joy back to the Decatur boosters moments later. Starting from the one-foot line, the Cadets could move only to their five in three running plays, -and were forced to punt. ... Steve Troxel booted- from the end zone, x btit the ball nexer left his foot/as Hazelwood came busting through and blocked the ball with his chest. The ball rolled out to the two yard line where it was downed by a Cadet, with Decatur taking possession. The Jackets were not to be denied this time, and Anspaugh handed to Sam Blythe who fol-
loWed a path cut by Hazelwood to the end zone. Anspaugh booted the extra point up and out, and with 9:44 to play in the contest, the Jackets were in a lead they never relinquished. The Cadets weren’t quitting, however, as they moved into "Decatur territory in a desperate attempt to tie matters. On a third down and four at the Decatur 48, talented Tom Steinhauser, who was completely bottled up by the Decatur defenders all night, attempted to go off tackle. He was halted for a one yard gain when snowed under by Hazelwood. Sam Blythe and Manny Ybarra. Ike Ends Threat On fourth and two, fullback Art Borders tried the dther side of the line but was met and stopped by big John Eichenauer for no gain giving the Yellow Jackets the ball with 3:33 to play. Keeping the ball on the ground, Anspaugh began to run out the clock, and was aided by a first down picked up by Sam Blythe and another to Elliott on a nineyard run to the Cadet 30, where the ball was resting when the Jackets left the field with their fifth' win of the season. The Yeoman-coached Yellow Jackets had several scoring chances in the first half but failed to capitalize on them and had to rely on their rugged defense to keep Concordia helpless. Midway in the first period, Hazelwood recovered a fumble on the Cadet 25 after a jarring tackle by Jerry Efly, who played one of his

most outstanding games of the season last night. Sam Blythe and Elliott carried to the Concordia 13, but the home team recovered a fumble on their own IT to stop the threat. At the start of the second period, Egly, with a helping hand from Ybarra, caused another fumble, this one recovered by John Custer on the Concordia 38. But the Jackets were stymied by a 5-yard penalty and were unable to advance the ball, with Elliott punting to Steinhause, who called for a fair catch on his own 29. Ybarra Leads Defenders nie Jacket defense, led by Ybarra, then stiffened, and with two consecutive tackles by the small but powerful Ybarra for losses of five and two yards, pushed Concordia back to its own 12, with a forth and 27 situation. Troxel got off a bad boot, and the ball rolled out on the Cadet 25. But again the Jackets could not take advantage of the opportunity. Elliott gained five yards, and Melchi three, but on fourth down and three, Sam Blythe shot off tackle and was halted just inches short of a first down. Three minutes later the two clubs went to their dressing rooms for the halftime intermission with a pair of goose eggs on the scoreboard. The Yellow Jackets now have more than a week to rest up and prepare for their final game of the season a week from Friday, when they travel to Angola to
