How They're Doing In Lightest Mexico

MEXICO CITY — A man can’t help feeling pride and satisfaction at society’s increasing push toward politeness. And we view this' (along with other eminent students of human behavior) as a healthy sign of progress. The tendency has developed to a point that merits some discussion on a comparitive basis. We owe the acquired status, of course, to the police and a set of laws which forbids rudeness to fellow citizens. Let us join the forces of law and order whose example in mannerliness is setting the pace for virtually all civilized nations. Up home an officer chances upon a gentleman who has just garroted his mother-in-law and, naturally, feels no remorse. In answer to the constable’s obvious question, the man shouts, “I scragged her and my only regret is she don’t have nine lives so I could give repeat performances.” After a preliminary investigation (consisting of disengaging the* suspect’s hands from his late inlaw’s wind pipe), the gendarme escorts his man to the station and books him on “suspicion of murder.” Mexican police ( while polite, haul the gentleman in and state flatly, “MURDER.”.Then it is up to die party of the first part to prove it is not either. Aside from being the epitome of good breeding, such measures eliminate the need for expressing a definite opinion, for which the realm of officialdom seems to have an aversion. (In newspaper lingo this is known as “editorializing” and even today's editorial writers are moving away from it. Implication is fast becoming the accepted practice.)
