Fort Wayne Teacher Is Sole Nominee

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — The woman most likely to be the next president of the Indian'a State Teachers Association can speak with equal understanding as either a teacher or a parent. Mrs. Helen Blackledge, principal of Southern Heights School, Fort Wayne, is the only nominee to date for the presidential election, to be held during the 110th annual ISTA convention opening Thursday in Indianapolis and six other cities. Mrs. Blackledge has two sons, and five grandchildren. Her husband, who had been a captain in the Army, and she were living in Manila at the time it was captured by the Japanese in World War II and both were placed in separate prison camps. She learned later that her husband had survived the Bataan death march but died of abuse three years later in a prison camp. She returned to her native Fort Wayne where shp resumed teaching to support her family, One of the things she had to teach her own children, and still is seeking to teach school children, was not to hate. “You know war causes people to do things, so you say to children not to hate people for v/hat they do, but to have a Vandalism Reported To Decatur Police A vandalism incident was reported to the city police Monday evening by Mrs. Walt Keesen, 315 N. Third St. A balloon filled .with water had been thrown through a storm window on the west side of the house. The city police are investigating.

hatred of war,” she explained. “Much of prejudice is a lack of knowledge.” From her own experience as a parent and a teacher, Mrs. Blackledge also feels strongly that parents should begin early to help train their children toward eventual independence. “independence is not something you suddenly have, or don’t have. You grow toward it,” she said. “It’s pretty important to teach a child you» have respect for his opinion and to help him line up the pros and cons and make a decision. But you need to give them the background for being able to make decis iohs.” Mrs. Blackledge will be completing with this ISTA convention, a term as president of the Indiana Association of Elementary School Principals. She is a past president of the Association of Childhood Education and has been vice-president of the Fort Wayne PTA Council. The attractive mother is a trilevel teacher, which means she has taught not only elementary but also high school and college classes. Her range of training as a teacher also is wide. She has taught music, and journalism in addition to her courses and sings in the choir of the Fort Wayne Street Methodist Church. Both sons, like their father, have chosen military careers. David is a captain in the field artillery and teaches ROTC at Rutgers University. Robert is with the Army at Fort McClellan, Anniston, Alabama. A biography of Mrs. Blackledge, published last year, referred to three grandchildren. “Make that five,” she laughed. “I have two more grandchildren since then. The youngest is five months old.
