ignation, the board voted 7-1 to draw up a statement of “principles and procedures” to improve its relations with the superintendent. Willis makes $48,500 a year as Chicago superintendent and $32,000 a year as executive secretary of a “blue ribbon” study of Massachusetts schools. Only President Kennedy, who received SIOO,OOO a year plus $90,000 fß*s/ expenses, makes more. Although Willis’ resignation was triggered by a dispute over the transfer of gifted students io two. South Side high schools, it was preceded and followed by civil rights demonstrations. The Rev. Arthur M. Brazier, chairman of the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO), said . Chicago Negroes “will not rest until Mr. Willis resigns or his resignation is accepted.” “Mr. Willis is now the director of the Chicago school system,” the Rev. Mr. Brazier said. “The Board of Education is a rubber stamp.” The CCCO is planning a massive one-day boycott of Chicago schools Oct. 22 in protest of Willis’ policies which civil rights groups say serve to continue de facto segregation. Civil rights- leaders say that because many neighborhoods in Chicago are segregated or all cne color, the traditional “neighborhood schools” also are segregated or all one color. The civil rights groups protested against mobile classrooms which Willis placed on the grounds of overcrowded schools. They contended Willis should have transferred the children from overcrowded schools into other neighborhoods—and thus break down the traditional patterns. Mme. Nhu Peeved At Cool Reception WASHINGTON (UPD—South Viet Nam’s traveling first lady, Mme. Ngo Dinh Nhu, appears to be peeved at the reception—or lack of it—accorded her visit by official Washington. The Capital debut of the sharp-tongued sister-in-law of Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh took place Wednesday in a hotel only a few blocks from the White House, but there were only two administration officials in attendance. She criticized the Kennedy administration and said the “Vietnamese government looks much more anti-Communist than the American government.” She claimed there were “distortions and blackouts" in news dispatches from Saigon. The administration’s studied coolness was not the only rebuff Mme. Nhu suffered Wednesday. She sought in vain for a meeting with her father, Tran Van Chuong, who quit as Vietnamese ambassador to the United States this summer in protest against the actions of his daughter and his government in repressing the Buddhists. She went to Chuong’s home in northwest Washington Wednesday night but he was not home. He has said he will* not see her. The cold shoulder from her father may have hurt South Viet Nam’s first lady, but it was the chilly non-reception accorded her by official Washington that bothered her more. She told the Women’s National Press Club Wednesday that though hers was an unofficial visit and “I cannot expect the red carpets, there are hundreds of ways” in which the U. S. government could have shown “more courtesy” jn welcoming her. She said she had evidence that some Kennedy administration officials have “no eagerness to win the war against Communists” in South Viet Nam. Mme. Nhu criticized as political pressure a recent withholding of U.S. commercial aid to Saigon. “I cannot see how such a thing can be done without reason against a government which is winning the war.”
School Boy Admits False Accusations VINCENNES, Ind. (UPD—A 17-year-old boy has admitted Writing letters to falsely aceuse two of his high school teachers of Communist sympathies. The Vincennes Lincoln High School senior said he had hoped the letters- would result in the firing of at least one of the faculty members. Principal William Decker of the school and postal authorities met with the boy and his mother Wednesday after a letter was traced to him. He said he composed and mimeographed the letters and then mailed them to residents of Vincennes from postal boxes in Evansville because he “disagreed” with the way one of the teachers conducted class. The youth apologized and admitted there was no foundation for charges of pro-Communist sympathy contained in the letters. The two accused teachers said they would not press charges if three conditions were met. They asked the youth to admit the falsity of his charges publicly, to attend church regularly for a year and to resign from the staff of the school newspaper. A two-week investigation by postal inspectors began when local residents turned over the letters to authorities. Decker said the boy would be placed on probation for a year. No other discipline was planned. Ridgeway Taken To State Penal Farm Deputy sheriff Hafold August and a member of the former sheriff's posse, Harold Theime, left this morning for Putnamville with Richard Paul Ridgeway, 19-year-old Topeka, Kansas, magazine salesman.
