The Yellow Jackets will also be out to end their home portion of Sieury Handicap Tourney Sunday The ‘Steury Fall Handicap Golf Tournament’ will be held Sunday at the Decatur Golf Course, according to Luke Majorki, PGA pro and owner of the Decatur golf course. the schedule on a winning note, as Friday’s contest will be the season finale at Worthman Field. Game time is 8 p. m. again, and another huge crowd is expected to attend for the third week in succession. The Decaturites will also be out to win themselves some free milk, as Ralph Smith, Jr., of the Smith Pure Seal Milk Co., 134 S. 13th St., has made the team “an offer.” Smith told head coach Wally Yeoman Tuesday afternoon he is going to donate 'one case of 44 half -pint cartons of milk, either white or chocolate, after the game. Milk Offer He added, however, that “if the team wins I will donate an additional case of half-pints for every touchdown the team scores.” Thus, the Decaturites will be out not only to improve upon their 3-2 conference record and 4-2 overall mark, but to gain some free milk for themselves and the coaching staff. The Yellow Jackets will test their vaunted high-scoring offense against a rugged Kendallville defense Friday night. The Jackets have scored 102 points in their last three games and have now totaled 114 points in five conference games, second only to Garrett’s league high of 130. Kendallville has scored 64 points in five games and allowed 51. Allowed Less Points 'The Comets, however, had allowed only 19 points in four conference games until losing to New Haven 32-21 last Friday. The Jackets have allowed their opponents 61 points in five NEIC tests. The two Friday foes have identical records of 3-2 in the conference, good for a tie for fourth place, and also own identical 4-2 overall marks. The Jackets are expected to be in better physical shaiX' than when they upended Columbia City last week by a 25-0 count. Unless injuries come up in practice tonight, the team should be back to near top strength physically.
Hammond High Still Tops In Prep Rankings By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Ev—ansville North and Gary Andrean, two relative newcomers, crashed the Indiana high school football “Big 10” today for the first time, but the pack still chased Hammond’s Wildcats for j the mythical state crown. • < It was the fourth week in a ■ row for the Wildcats to pace the elite. Coach Bernie Krueg- j ger’s club seeks its 17th consecutive victory, seventh this season, "when it travels to East j Chicago Washington Friday. North, beaten only at Rich- ' mond, 6-0, when several key players were sidelined by illness, was promoted from 12th place to ninth and Andrean climbed from nowhere to take over 10th place. Andrean Beat Muncie North has played football only since 1957 and this is Andrean’s third varsity grid season. The undefeated Steel City club hung up its sixth straight win last weekend, a whopping 33-0 lacing of Muncie Central, which skidded from 10th spot to a tie for 16th. Two other North Central Conference members lost ground in the fifth weekly roll call. Anderson, ninth last week, was also dropped entirely after its 34-14 blasting by Marion. Richmond slipped from fifth to seventh after barely beating New Castle, 13-7. Kokomo remained second, receiving the other first - place vote and finishing with 88 points. New Albany remained third, Elkhart fourth, Evansville Reitz sixth and South Bend Central eighth. Indianapolis Cathedral, tied but unbeaten, was promoted from seventh to fifth place. Terre Haute Gerstmeyer, Mishawaka, Gary Froebel, Bloomington and Evansville Memorial were recognized for the first time and Indianapolis Tech, LaPorte and Hammond Tech were also dropped. Rockne Inspires Noire Dame Team CHICAGO (UPI) — Knute Rockne has been dead for more than 30 years but his influence is still helping build the spirit of Notre Dame football teams. Coach Hugh Devore told football writers here Tuesday that a long-forgotten bust of the great cpach is a major factor in the spirit of this year’s Irish squad. The bust came from the souvenirs of Rockne’s brother-in-law Joe Diericks, custodian of Notre Dame Stadium 'since it was built in 1931, the year Rockne was killed in a Kansas plane crash. This season the bust has been presented each week to the player whose performance was judged best in the previous Saturday’s game. “We have a little ceremony each Monday and present it,” Devore said, “It’s a kind of a little gadget we use to build enthusiasm.” This week the’ trophy was presented to center Norm Nicola who Devore said played a fine game in Saturday’s 17-14 victory over California. “I haven’t seen a center block like he did for many, many years,” Devore said. Earlier winners were captain and guard Bob Lehmann and sophomore tackle Gene Arrington. The 75-pound bust is placed atop the locker of the winning player for the week following his award, Devore said. places and total points: 1. Hammond (9).. 99 2. Kokomo (1)88 3. New Albanyß2 4.
