Private Room for Study Boosts Youngster’s Grades
- * '* •’ ' -’■ ' - ■’■ ■>.- ;, ; -Lijj UM * : >' * Hoil ai NfiS ••• srbhm |||h New’study-bedroom in attic has been insulated with mineral wool for year-round comfort and to make heating and cooling economical.
« One way parents can help a child achieve the grades he needs is to provide him with a comfortable, distraction-free place to study. It should be well-lighted, quiet, and equipped with a goodsize desk and comfortable chair. Ideally, a student should have a room of his own for sleep and study. If he doesn't have one now, a good place to make one is in the expansion attic of many postwar homes, or the catch-all space under the roof found in most older houses. How simple or lavish you make the bedroom-study area is mostly a matter of personal taste and finances, but extra care should be taken with the key elements because of their importance in providing both comfort and utility. To dispel darkness and help make a converted attic bright and cheerful, make full use of windows. If possible, the desk should be placed near a window so that natural light passes over the left shoulder of the right-handed person, and vice versa.
Green Family No Longer Blue ■, From Cold Thorough insulation has solved the problems of high heating costs and winter discomfort for one Long Island family of five. “The first winter in our new house our heating bills soared as the temperature dropped, yet we never could get even, comfortable heat,” said Mrs. Charlotte Green, of Huntington Station, N.Y. “Our daughter Chris’s bedroom next to the attic was always cold. Another trouble spot was the family room. The floor was always too cold for the children to sit on.” It’s quite a different story for the Green family nowadays. Since they had the house insulated with mineral wool to meet recommended standards, it’s warm all winter and drafts have been eliminated. Chris’s room is always cozy and the floors are warm' enough for barefoot boys and inveterate floor-sitters, Mrs. Green said. The Greens got the insulation idea from neighbors. After talking to an insulation contractor, they found that the utility company would immediately reduce their gas budget payments by $5 a month once the house was thoroughly insulated. This meant that the insulation would pay for itself in a few years. The insulation contractor, using pneumatic equipment, blew mineral wool into walls, ceilings and floors, making a complete blanket around the heated sections of the house. He followed the standards recommended by the National Mineral Wool Insulation Association to provide maximum comfort and lower heating costs.
Good artificial light is important, too. Don’t cut corners on the desk lamp, since one that’s poorly designed can cause eye fatigue. A good place to turn for advice on proper lighting is the local electric power supplier. A key to year-round comfort in any attic conversion is insulation installed correctly and in amounts meeting recommended standards. Batts or blankets of mineral wool will prevent much of the sun’s heat from penetrating through to the new room below. Without proper insulation, most converted attics would be too hot to work or sleep in during the late spring and early fall school days, as well as in summer. And, of course, too cold in winter. Many families save money by installing the insulation themselves, since it’s a reasonably easy job. Building' materials dealers will provide instruction tips. If adequate insulation is used, the existing heating system probably can be extended to heat the ' new room in winter, at low cost. ’
Farm Home Maintenance Simplified The walls around the back door in a farm home can become unsightly in short order if care is not taken to protect them. ,One of the easiest ways to pro‘vide good looking, easy-to-clean walls in this area is to install plastic-finished Marlite right over the old surfaces. This plas-tic-finished hardboard paneling, which will withstand abrasions and hard knocks, can be dampwiped clean. Even messy handprints and stains can be removed with a sudsy cloth. The predecorated paneling, which comes in modern colors, handsome woodgrains and pleasant patterns, does not require periodic painting or refinishing. Wind-Resistant Roof Flouts Hurricanes It’s time to batten down houses in high-wind areas for the storm season. The first spot to check is the roof, because once it’s damaged the rest of the house and its furnishings are wide open to the driving rains that sweep along with most storms. Roofers, home owners and housing officials in hurricane and other high-wind areas of the country have found that self-seal-ing asphalt shingles with the Underwriters’ Laboratories windresistant label have successfully withstood 100-mph hurricanes. They are also fire-resistant and durable.
Program Home Upkeep For Good Living Values
Planning ahead on your home improvements keeps your house in good trim, modern and pleasant. It’s easier on the family budget too. A five - year program makes good sense for many, as it takes into consideration growing youngsters and changing family needs, according to the Masonite Home Service Bureau. “The way to maintain a home’s living and actual values,” says the bureau, “is to keep it up. One year, it may mean buying a new living room suite; another, repainting the exterior; another, installing air-conditioning. “Without improvements, values decline. With them, the home is pleasant in which to live and entertain.” The bureau suggests a family conference to plan a five-year home improvement progr am. This should result in decisions and a list. Dad and mom can take it from there, dealing directly with their qualified lumber and building supply dealer, whose training and experience fit him to aid his customers. If he is a Design-Service-Counsel dealer, he can offer custom designs to fit the family’s needs for such an improvement as converting a porch into a study or family room. He can recommend contractors and finance plans. j Instead of painting the house, says, the family may prefer a prefinished hardboard siding, guaranteed for 10 years and most likely good for many more without anything but washing. Polycote siding, available in four colors, now in available in the eastern half of the country Sliding Doors Easy To Make Durable sliding doors for cabinets can be cut from V 4” thick Marlite paneling, which is predecorated to prevent an attractive appearance. This plasticfinished hardboard paneling can be damp-wiped dean; never needs refinishing. Since Marlite comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns, sliding doors can be made for units in any room of the house — kitchen, bathroom, family room, nursery or bedroom. Wind Funnel If you need air circulation in your yard in the hot summer months, plan your’fences with a louver pattern so the wind can circulate. The louvers will preserve your privacy. Beautify Pool A standard size, rectangular swimming pool becomes extraordinary when accessorized with screens and lounge decks. Wood decks can be built of Douglas fir lumber, designed in tiers of two or more levels for intriguing effect. Fir or cedar screens at the back, circling the pool on two sides, privide privacy and control wind.

through Lumaside, Inc., national distributor. In door improvements also may utilize factory - finished hardboards, such as Masonite Royalcote in teak, elm, walnut, cherry, oak and pecan. They, too, last for years with simple dampwiping as maintenance. Slab Porch Converted Into Room When a house has only a slab for a front pbrch, family members must enter with muddy or wet shoes, dripping or snow-cov-ered coats. A secretary, living alone in such a house, decided to build a room on the slab. She hired a contractor to enclose the space, measuring approximately 8 by 10 feet, leaving ample windows and finishing the interior walls with Masonite Royalcote woodgrain paneling. To match the board and batten extenior of the frame home, the contractor installed a hardboard siding with a built-in batten calleld Masonite Sunline. The secretary painted it herself. The protected porch now provides an extra sifting room and a place to put wet footwear and raincoats. “I feel a lot safer, too, with an enclosed porch,” she tells friends. For ideas on dressing up on enclosed porch, send a postcard to the Home Service Bureau 29 North Wacker Drive, Chicago 6, 111., requesting free plan AE--275. New Type Roof Conserves Cash Are you looking for ways to save money on your home and cut upk ee p costs after it is built? Then you should consider having the roof built of nail, laminated 2x4s which can be left exposed to form the ceiling as well. You save money on labor because such a roof goes on fast. You have little or no upkeep, for you do not. have to stain or paint, unless you wish to. You save money on fuel because a solid wood slab four inches deep has high insulation value. You save on lumber for there are no rafters. Your architect has much more freedom in designing a home when the roof and ceiling are made with one wood membrane. Also, your rooms have much more height and give the illusion of more size. Even a small bedroom takes on extra dimension when the ceiling is two or three feet taller than usual. You can use lower and less costly grades of Douglas fir or west coast hemlock 2x4s with complete safety. This ceiling has good texture and you can use either surfaced • or rough saWn lumber. You can apply rooofing or cedar shingles directly to the roof, using only heavy building payer between for extra insulation.
