MONROE W.S.C.S. MEETS THURSDAY The Monroe Methodist Woman’s Society of Christian Service had their regular meeting Thursday evening in the fellowship hall of the church. The prelude was played by Mrs. Homer Winteregg. The group sang, “I Love To Tell the Story.” Devotions were given by the Rev. Charles Elam. For the special number, Mrs. Richard Everett and daughter, Connie, sang a duet. Mrs. Rene Brandt, in charge of the program, introduced the Rev. Evan Bergwell, minister of the Simpson Methodist church in Fort Wayne, who showed slides of Africa from where he recently returned from a tour of mission work. Mrs. Harry Crownover, president, opened the business meeting with prayer. The secretary’s report was read and approved. The “Call to Prayer and Self-Denial service” will be held following the regular meeting in November. “Day Apart” will be held at the Christ Methodist church Tuesday. Committees were named for the Harvest supper which is to be held October 25 from 5 to 8 in the church basement. Linda Fuller and Georgeanna Barlett joined the society as new members. For the social time, refreshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Eli Schwartz, Mrs. Glen Stucky, Mrs. Howard Habegger, Mrs. Harvey Haggard, Mrs. Robert Isch, Mrs. Harry Crownover, Mrs. Darold Borne, Mrs. Herb Fruchte, and Mrs. Paul Nussbaum with Mrs. Charles Elam presiding at the punch bowl. Forty-four members and nine guests were present. DISTRICT MEETING HELD IN GENEVA The Olive Rebekah lodges of Adams, Blackford, and Wells counties held their district meeting in Geneva, Tuesday. Mrs. Mary Decker, assembly president, was in charge of the school of instruction. District officers elected for the coming year were president, Mrs. Martha Belle; vice president, Mrs. Mabie White; secretary, Mrs. Daisy Shady; treasurer, Mrs. Evelyn Plasterer. The district officers appointed from Decatur were Mrs. Dee Black and Mrs. Edna Callow. There were 100 attending both the morning and afternoon sessions. Those attending from Decatur were Evelyn Plasterer, Maggie Haley, Sadie Barnett, Nancy Lengerich, Anna Hancher, Helen Liechty, Edna Callow, Georgia Kreigh, Letha Senders, Olive Solomon, Clara Meyers, and Iva Gilpin. The white gavel was presented to the Olive lodge of Decatur for per cent gain in attendance. POCAHONTAS LODGE MEETS TUESDAY The Pocahontas lodge met Tuesday evening with a good attendance reported. There will be a social meeting of the lodge October 15. The 4th district Past Presidents Parley of the American Legion auxiliary will meet at Post 330 Thursday beginning with a potluck dinner at noon. A meeting will follow the dinner with an installation of officers planned. The Evangeline Circle of the Zion United Church of Christ will meet at the home of Mrs. Thomas Schlotterback Wednesday at 7:30 p. m. The Our Lady of Good Counsel Study club will meet at 8 p. m. Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Otto Baker. SOYETTES ENJOY “HOBO” PARTY ' The Decatur Soyettes held their October meeting at Hanna-Nutt-man park, Tuesday, with 14 members present. Games were enjoyed by the group and Marjorie Harden won the prize for the best dressed bum. A delicious lunch completed the enjoyable evening of which Pauline Edwards, Susan McCullough and Vivian Painter were in charge. Next month Lorene Shell and Onalee Elzey will serve as co-chairmen. SHAKESPEARE CLUB HOLDS OPENING MEETING The Shakespeare club met at the home of Mrs. Carl Gerber Wednesday afternoon for their first meeting of the new club year. Mrs. R. E. Allison told of the life of Leonardo Vinci who was a pioneer scientist as wejl as the famous painter of “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper.” Miss Bertha Heller, president, told briefly some of the history of the club and gave recognition to Mrs. Arthur Suttles, Sr., and Mrs. John Tyndall, who have been members of the club for over 50 years. Tea was then served to the 21 members present. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. George Buckley. The Olive Rebekah lodge will meet Tuesday evening at 7:30 at the Red Men’s hall. The Ladies K. of C. auxiliary will hold a card party at the K. of C. hall Wednesday at. 8 p. m. The Our Lady of Lourdes Study club will meet at the home of Mrs. John Kintz, Sr., Wednesday at 8 p. m. The Mt. Tabor Methodist church W.S.C.S. will meet at the church Friday at 7:30 p. m. The American Legion auxiliary will hold a business meeting at the American Legion home Friday at 8 p. m. BUSINESS WOMEN PLAN DINNER MEET The regular dinner meeting of the Decatur Business and Professional Women’s club will be held at the American Legion home at 6:30 p.m., October 9. Highlights . of the evening will be a book review “Black Like Me,” author John Howard Griffin, given by Mrs. Lucille Block wood of Berne * and a short talk by Gerald Mast, regional of the Indiana | mental health association. The public relations committee consisting of Betty Bucher, chairman, Helen Johnson, Mary Howard, Irene Zwick and Ruth Winnes will be in charge at the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Hartman, Fort Wayne, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Janice Ann, to Dr. William C. Gillig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Gillig, 316 Marshall street, Decatur. Miss Hartman is a graduate of Central Catholic high school, Fort Wayne, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, and St. Francis College, and is a fourth grade teacher at St. Jude’s school, Fort Wayne. Her fiance is a graduate of Xavier University and Indiana school of dentistry and is currently practicing in a medical and dental clinic in Florida. Applications Filed By 80,000 Merchants According to the Indiana department of revenue, approximately 80,000 retail merchants have already filed their application for a “registered retail merchant certificate” as required by the sales tax law which was recently held to be constitutional by the .Indiana supreme court. Retail merchants, in this group will receive their' registered retail merchant certificate by mail within a few days, and they need not take any further action at this time. Those who have not filed, however, I should do so immediately. Thefts Reported To Decatur Police Two, thefts were reported to the local police department Friday. and both are now under investigation. Jim Roudenbush, «who owns a garage at 201 S. First St., reported at 11 p.m. Friday that a battery had been stolen from an automobile while parked near his garage between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. The car is owned by Erv Elzey, of Decatur. No value on the battery was listed. Dorothy Ray of Willshire, O. reported at 2.38 p.m. that between 3:30 pirn, and midnight on either Wednesday or Thursday a flash camera and Carrying case, and a full-length coat were stolen from her ear while it was parked in the General Electric lot. Births At the Adams county memorial hospital: Edward and Peggy Davidson Dick, route 4. Decatur, are the parents of a 7 !b., 13 oz. baby girl 'born at 12:57 p. m. Friday. A 6 lb.. 2 oz. baby boy was born at 10 01 p. m. Friday to Joe L. and Maryann Wicky Hilty, Berne. Martin Pledged To Franklin Fraternity The Franklin college chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity has pledged Jim Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Reed, 310 Jefferson street. Martin is a freshman at Franklin and as a pledge of Phi Delta Theta will participate in the social and service functions of the fraternity. One Fan Is Hurt As Bleachers Collapse INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — A row of seats in the bleachers at the Indianapolis Washington - Indianapolis Scecina high school football game collapsed Friday night, injuring a fan and throwing several others to the ground: —~ Charles Overmeyer, 48, Indianapolis, was treated at Community Hospital but released without being admitted as a bed patient. MR. AND MRS. EMMANUEL MILLER, pictured above with their two son: and six daughters in a picture taken in 1941, will celebrate their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary Sunday at their home. They were married October 6, 1906, in the Methodist parsonage and now reside at 609 Indiana street. They have 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
