MRS. LOUIS JACOBS NAMED VICE PRESIDENT Mrs. Louis Jacobs, of Decatur, was elected first vice president of the Valparaiso University Guild at the 32nd annual convention of the national service organization, held at Valparaiso U. campus over the weekend. Mrs. Cyril Wisman of Cleveland, 0., was elected president. Other officers are Mrs. Carl Hedlt, Evansville, second vice president; Mrs. Leonard Heitmuller of Washington, D. C., secretary, and Mrs. E. W. Schroeter of Bluffalo, N. Y., treasurer. Mrs. Jacobs was national second vice president during the preceding year. Mrs. Jacobs and Mrs. Nelson Doty, president of the Decatur chapter, were delegates to the convention. Approximately 8,500 women from 150 chapters across the nation were represented at the convention sessions, where decisions were made regarding the 1962-34 gift to the university: funds for a connecting lounge between the Dau-Kreinhei-der dormitories and an increase in faculty salaries. A new national project for the year is additional lighting for the campus. In addi-

Featured convention speakers were Dr. Conrad Seegers, visiting professor of education at Valpo; Alfred Looman, director of placement and vocational guidance at the school, and Mrs. Blair Holman, wife of the president of Manchester College. Dr. O. P. Kretzman, president of Valpo U., delivered an address on the state of the university and conducted Saturday vespers at which induction of officers took place, as well as the dedication of a new indoor-outdoor altar, gift of individual guild members for the Gloria Christi chapel. The Rev. Harold Schweigert, Minneapolis, Minn., gave the sermon at the annual convention wor-, ship service in University Memorial chapel Sunday morning. CHILDREN'S STORY HOUR TO BEGIN SATURDAY Miss Bertha Heller, librarian, announces that the story hour for children will again be held on the second floor of the library starting Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. C. Scott Martindill and Miss Marilyn Knudsen will present the program. Die children’s classics with the pop-up illustrations that proved so popular in the past will be used this fall. A new series of film strips has been purchased by the library and the first of these will be shown Saturday. The program is planned to appeal to the boys and girls who “just missed” kindergarten and those in kindergarten and the grade.
MISS GAYLE CUSTER HONORED WITH SHOWER Miss Gayle Custer, bride-elect of Raymond Lantemier, was honored Sunday with a bridal shower given by Mrs. Jim Wall and Mrs. Pat Nelson at the latter’s home. Attending the shower were the Mesdames Elmer Mueller, Ed Miller, Otil Witte, Norman Muelller, Joe Egts, Elmer Korte, Fort Wayne and the Mesdames Glen Custer and David Liby of Decatur. Sending gifts but unable to attend were Mrs. Carl Sheets and Miss Elaine Korte. REV. DR. EVAN BERGWALL TO BE GUEST SPEAKER The Rev. Dr. Evan Bergwall, minister of the Simpson Methodist church in Fort Wayne will be the guest speaker at the’ meeting of the Monroe W. S. C. S. Thursday evening at 7:30 at the church. He has recently returned from a tour of mission work in Africa. Men are invited to attend the meeting as well as the women of the church. LEAH CIRCLE HOLDS MEETING The Leah Circle of the W.S.W.S. of the Decatur E.U.B. church met recently for their September meeting at the. home of Mrs. Dick McConnell. Mrs. Dick Maloney opened the meeting by reading from the “Upper Room” and leading the group in prayer. She called attention to the fall institute and the Bible depth study being held. Mrs. Flossie Hower, program chairman, read the scripture from Ephesians 4:1-16. She then gave an interesting review of the book entitled “Take My Hands.” The hostess served refreshments to the seven members and one guest, Mrs. Joe Farthing, present. The next meeting will be held October 24.

Thomas Burk, 331 Mercer Avenue, is a graduate of Decatur high school and attended Ohio Northern University. She is presently employed at the Adams county memorial hospital. Her fiance was graduated from Logan high school and Ohio Northern University college of pharmacy, where he was a member of the Sigma Pi social fraternity. He is employed as a pharmacist at the Ohio State University hospital, Columbus, O.

Savings Bond Sales Increase In County T. F. Graliker, chairman of the Adams coun'ty U.S. savings bonds committee, has received a report revealing that the county’s savings bonds sales for August were $62,335 compared with-$49,204 for the corresponding period of last year. The state’s sales for August were $11,863,569 and $10,651,647 for a like period of 1962, a gain of 11.4 per cent. Sixty-one of the state’s 92 counties reported sales gains for the month when compared with sales of August, 1962.

To Make Revisions In City Directory Decatur homes and businesses will each be visited within the next eight weeks by Miss Mary J. Dunn, representative of R. L. Polk & Co., which every two years produces the city directory. Miss Dunn just completed a very fine directory of Ludington; Mich., before coming here. She is a native of Columbus. 0., but works for the Polk Co., which is located in Detroit. Every two years an employe of the Polk company visits every home to get the correct spelling of the names of those who live there, their wives, employment, *etc. It is considered a very valuable service for the city. The Decatur Chamber of Commerce, as well as most of the larger businesses in town, subscribe. The Chamber even has a library of other Polk directories, for use of Decatur people who might need them. is asked to cooperate with the lady, who will only ask regular “census” type questions, for inclusion in the new directory. County Pay Raises Effective Jan. 1 INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — Pay raises for county judges and certain other county officers, which were voted in by the 1963 Legislature. became effective Jan. 1, 1964. Atty. Gen. Edwin Steers made the ruling Monday in response to Republican State Sen. Kenneth Brown, Muncie, who asked whether the increases were effec-! tive on that date or on Aug. 12 when the acts of the 1963 Legislature became effective. Earl Fuhrman Heads Stratton Place Group Earl C. Fuhrman, of 415 Stratton Way, was elected president of the Stratton Place Community Association at a meeting of the board of directors held Monday evening at the Fuhrman home. Lawrence Beavers, 322 Limberlost Trail, was elected vice -president; Mrs Carl Lose, 328 Stratton Way, secretary; and S. L. Hain, Jr., 206 Stratton Way, treasurer. Reckless driving and speeding in the area were discussed, and a committee on safety was appointed to work in any way possible with the Decatur .police department to protect the lives and well-being of the children in Stratton Place. Garold Coolman. chairman of the 1963 picnic held September 8, said that there was an all-time record attendance of more than 300 persons. The following were elected directors of the Stratton Place Association at the picnic: C. C. Langston, Mrs. Carl Lose, Lawrence Hart, Garold Coolman, Jack Reiff, and Lawrence Beavens. Decatur Doctor To State Convention Dr. C. William Freeby of Decatur will be one of the members of the house of delegates who will be seated at the 114th annual convention of the Indiana state medical association October 14 I through 17 at the Murat Temple in I Indianapolis. Outstanding physicians and surgeons from the United States and England will present lectures and courses at the convention, and a I greater portion of the more than 4,000 members of the association are expected to register. In addition to the medical program. several scientific exhibits will depict new discoveries and techniques tn. the- medical field through photographs, recordings and various visual media. I During its three business sessions, the association's house of delegates, one of whom is Dr. Freeby. will pass on resolutions, an amendment to the constitution of the association and other pertinent matters affecting Indiana doctors.
