Ford, Koufax > To Open 1963 World Series NEW YORK (UPI) — Ralph Houk will confirm a long foregone conclusion today with an official announcement that Whitey Ford will open the World Series for the New Yankees Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Yankee Stadium. Ford will oppose Dodger ace Sandy Koufax in a duel that not only matches two of the finest left-handed pitchers in baseball but also could serve as a pivotal test around which the whole World Series may revolve. The Yankees, 7-5 favorites to win their 21st world championship, are all “in good physical shape,’’/ according to Houk, “and that includes Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris.” Third baseman Ken McMullen is the Dodgers’ only question mark. He’s suffering from a pulled hamstring mtiscle in his left leg and may not be ready by Wednesday. May Choose Downing Houk hinted that he may even announce his starting pitchers for the first two games at Yankee Stadium today and if he does, his second game choice undoubtedly will be 22-year-old southpaw Al Downing. Downing, who won 13 games for the Yankees since they brought him up from Richmond of the International League in June, didn’t look too good last Saturday when the Minnesota Twins tagged him with his fifth defeat by rapping him for five runs on six hits and five walks

in five innings. By one of those freak coincidences, southpaw Johnny Padres, who figures to be the Dodgers’ second game starter against Downing, also was cuffed around in his last start on Saturday night. The Phillies murdered practically every pitch he served up to them, raking him for 12 hits and eight runs before he was kayoed in the second. Battle Os Leftys the first two games of the current World Series will be strictly a battle of southpaws, with Ford, a 24-game winner, facing 25-game winner Koufax in the opener and Downing and Podres hooking up in the second contest. Should Koufax need any help, the odds are Alston will call on Still another left-hander from the bullpep in Ron Perranoski, who is easily the finest reliever in the game. Perranoski compiled a brilliant 1.67 earned run average this season while winning 16 games and losing only three. If Ford should falter in the opener, Houk would come in with either Ralph Terry, a right-hand-er, or Steve Hamilton, a lefthander, depending on the situation at the time. Following an off-day for travel on Friday, the site of the series will shift to Los Angeles for the third game on Saturday, Oct. 5. Jim Bouton, a right-handed 21game winner, is. scheduled to face veteran right-hander Don Drysdale in the third game with Ford and Koufax due to hook up again in the fourth.
