Average Handyman Can Install Paneling Only ordinary carpentry tools — hammer, saw and level — are needed to install today’s modern wall and ceiling paneling. Do-it-yourselfers have had good results working with 16” x 8’ planks of plastic-finished hardboard, according to Robert Huff, home improvement director for Marlite paneling. Each package of this paneling contains detailed installation instructions, Huff says, and handymen can figure out the project

before putting up the first plank. When paneling a room with Marlite planks, always start from a corner and work around the room. First tack a level 1” x 2” starter strip of wood temporarily in place at the bottom of the wall. The planks will rest on the strip during installation, but eventually the starter strip will be removed and a base molding will cover this space. Before beginning the installation Huff advises, plan the spacing of the planks on the wall. Then locate the first vertical, joint by marking a plumb line the required distance from the Corner. Trim the first plank, if necessary. Then apply adhesive to the plank and wall with a notched spreader.
Place the plank in position with the graved edge toward the wall area to be covered. All Marlite planks have tongue and groove edges to simplify installation, Huff says. , « Next fasten simple metal clips over the exposed groove edge. Clips shouM be placed 16” apart along the groove edge. The clips should 1 be fitted snugly to the panel’s grooved edge before being nailed to the wall. Adhesive is applied to each plank before the tongue is inserted into the grooove of the plank already installed. Press the planks gently together, allowing 1/16” in the joint. Huff points out that the clips are designed to help provide correct spacing between panels. The planks have a tempered hardboard base that is strong and dent resistant. A baked plastic finish provides a permanent, washable surface. Local lumber dealers carry the planks.-which come in Highfidelity woodgrains as well as attractive colors. Matching moldings also are available. Marlite planks are ¥4” thick. Delrin Peg-Board Fixturees Won’t Swing or Sway Handy Peg-Board panels will be more useful than ever with the white Delrin plastic fixtures that don’t swing or sway, decorators say. The newly -• designed fixtures can be snapped into position. They utilize two arms and lock into place in two adjoining holes. To remove, apply slight pressure forcing the prongs together. Hooks can be placed in any posimeet the storage or display ration — even upside down — to meet the storage or display requirements. From the appearance standpoint, the Delrin Peg-Board fixtures blend with any decor. Their edges are smooth and they are strong but light weight. They fit tightly jn the perforations without jiggling. Tough Masonite ¥4” Tempered Presdwood is ideal for use as a deck covering on boats.
