Mrs. O’Leary’s Fault When the Chicago fire destroyed 17,430 buildings and killed 240 people, it wasn’t the cow’s fault —it was Mrs. O’Leary’s. Yes, the October 9, 1871 fire was no accident — it’s common knowledge that cows kick and that hay burns. The lantern should have been well out of the reach of that poor old cow’s hooves. However, there was no fire prevention week back in those days, and Mrs. O’Leary didn’t have the advantages of the latest information. But no Adams county residents can claim such immunity! Fire Prevention Week — October 6-12 this year has been observed annually since 1922 during the week in which the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire falls. The object, of course, is to encourage the millions of people like Mrs. O’Leary to understand and eli-/ minate the causes of fire. Most fires can be prevented — they are not due to unpredictable accidents or unavoidable bad luck, any more than the Great Chicago Fire was. Figures complied by the National Fire Protection Association, sponsor of Fire Prevention Week, show that every day of the year the average fire toll includes 1,500 homes in the United States. More than half of the 11,800 fire deaths last year occurrred in homes, and more than onethird of the victims were children. And most of these fires could have been prevented . Uncomplicated, “stoppable” circumstances cause most fires — carelessly discarded cigarettes, overloaded and defective wiring, poorly maintained heating and cooking equipment. Watch for stories during the next two weeks that will help you lead a safer, fire-free life.

Only Two Polio Cases In Indiana INDIANAPOLIS (UPD— Indiana State Health Board officials said today it is unlikely that the polio incidence has ever been as low as this year. Only two confirmed cases have been reported to the board since Jan. 1, and both had their onset months ago, quite early in the year. Through September last year, 19 cases had been reported. The correspondent figures were 14 in 1961, 103 in 1960 and 133 in 1959.
Junior-Senior High For Southern Welk Recommendation that a new junior-senior high school be constructed and ready for occupancy by September, 1966, has been made for the Southern Wells county community schools in a survey of the area’s educational needs recently completed by a team from Ball State Teacher’s college. A 6-6 system of organization was recommended by the team. This means that the junior-senior or secondary school building would contain grades one through six. In line with this recommendation the Ball tSate group also proposed that in 1972, six years after the completion of the high school it proposed, a new elementary building be erected "very near’’ the centrally located secondary building. The team proposed that after the elementary school is completed a number of smaller Wells ocunty schools be closed including the Chester Center, Liberty Center and Petroleum buildings.
