Jim Martin Named To Franklin College Team
Jim Martin, 310 Jefferson st,, was one of 33 boys to report for Franklin College football practice early in September. Jim is a 1963 graduate of Decatur High School. The Grizzlies have been doing well so far this year; and boys like Martin have aided the cause greatly. He was one of several freshmen prospects which made the selection of starting players a tough decision for Coach “Red” Faught. Franklin took their opener from Olivet. Michigan, by a 13-7 score, then won last Saturday from Anderson College by a 26-6 tally. They travel to Madison for another Hoosier College Conference clash this Saturday. They meet a young, but tough Hanover team. Martin earned three letters in football at Decatur High, and was senior co-captain his last year. He also owns three baseball letters and two basketball letters from Decatur High.
DHSWins 20-36 Over Commodores Decatur high school defeated Decatur Catholic by a 20-36 score in a dual cross-country meat at the Hanna Park course Thursday afternoon. Denny Sheets and Dave Adams finished first and second respectively to pace the winners. Sheets posted a winning time of 10:39, exceptionally good for the course which is a short distance more than two miles. Adams recorded a runner-up time of ll : 03, while Ron Schnepp of Decatur Catholic was third in 11:05 and freshman Steve Bauman of Decatur high fourth in a 11:20 clocking. The Commodores are still running without their ace runner John Lose, who is out of atcion with pulled ligaments. The two Decatur schools and Adams Central will run at the local golf course Monday, and the county cross country meet is scheduled for the golf course on Wednesday, Oct. 2. P P & K Registration Closes Oct. 7 Registration for this year's Punt, Pass & Kick contest opened today at the Schwartz Ford Co., and will continued through Monday, October 7. The competition is co-sponsored this year by the Schwartz Ford Co. and the Decatur high school Booster Club. Harry Schwartz of Schwartz Ford said this morning that the time and date of the local competition will be announced next week. The program will be held at Worthman Field here. Punt, Pass & Kick, sponsored nationally by the Ford Division of the Ford Motor Company, is open to all boys aged eight through 11. A seven year old who will attain the age of eight by December 29 of this year may compete as an eight year old, while 11-year-old boy who becomes 12 on or before December 29, is not eligible. There is no cost to register, but a parent or guardian must accompany any boy who is registering. No special equipment is needed for the contest. The local grade schools are being visited by representatives of Schwartz Ford and the Booster Club, and many boys will receive their registration blanks in this manner. ' Boys who receive their blanks at school are urged to return them as soon as possible. If a youngster loses the registration form he receives at school, he may go to the local Ford company and sign up there.

Haugk Wins First In Chamber Outing Ideal golf weather brought nearly 100 golfers to the Decatur golf course Thursday afternoon to take part in the 14th annual Chamber of Commerce golf outing, according to George F. Laurent, honorary chairman, and co-chair-men Bill Lose, Jr., and Dr. H. R. Frey., Attendance at the chicken dinner held afterward at Hanna-Nutt-man Park rose to nearly 150 by the time the last chicken dinner was served. This year’s event was even larger than last year when the outing was considered the most successful of any to date. C. of C. Trophy To Haugk Fred Haugk won the low (net) handicap Chamber of Commerce trophy and Mike Murphy was awarded the non-member low handicap (net). Kenny Gaunt was awarded first place for low gross with an actual 37. In the special prize category: Dick Mies, longest putt on No. 3; Gerry Mack, longest throw from tee on No. 4; Ted Hill, longest drive from No. 6 tee off with putter inside rubber tire; Carl Gerber .closest to pin on No. 7; Harry Maddox, longest putt on No. 9 with ping pong ball; W. Polsz, closest chip to putting green; and special blind prizes: to, Walt Ostermeyer; Bryan Trout; Wayne Etzler; Lowell Harper; Lewis Beery; Merle Affolder; Bill Linnf and "Bill Snyder. 1963 Buick Open Shown Films of the 1963 Buick Open held in June highlighted the evenings affair at the climax of the chicken dinner picnic. Also, Luke Majorkr local PGA pro and owner of the Decatur golf course, was callled upon to remark on the PGA tourney held this week in Fort Wayne. Majorki was second in qualifying with a one-under-par round 70 and remained in the match play until the final 16Eighty five PGA pros vied for qualifications from which sixtyfour were chosen . The honorary chairman and cochairman expressed their gratitude to the committees for making the 14th annual event most suc r cessful.
SE, Monmouth Win In sth-6lh The Decatur Southeast and Monmouth copped victories in sth and 6th grade league baseball action Thursday afternoon. Southeast scored a pair of runs in the last of the fifth inning to edge the Lutheran school 12-11. Ron Lehman’s triple scored the tjeing run and Lehman scored tne winning run on an error. Monmoyth whipped Northwest A by a 10-7 score in the other game. Gerig homered in the,contest, Brown and Burger hurled for Monmouth with Journay catching. Jennings pitched and Shady caught for the Northwest team. Ossian Driver's License Suspended The driver’s license of Larry Wayne Deßolt, route 1, Ossian, has been suspended, according-to the latest driver suspension list issued by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The suspension is due to the point system, and is indefinite, becoming effective August 12. Decatur Freshmen Down Berne, 6 - 0
The Decatur high school freshmen team downed Berne’s freshmen by a 6-0 score at Worthman Field Thursday night. Halfback Lon Hawkins scored the lone Decatur touchdown in the first period on a 21-yard fun and the local eleven held on for the victory in a hard-fought battle. Led by alternating quarterbacks Bill Brown and Phil Hess, Decatur drove to the Berne 21 yayd line in the first period, and with 2:48 remaining in the quarter, Hawkins sprinted around his left end, shook two tacklers at the five yard line and went in for the touchdown.
