Social Security Quiz
Q. I am 67 years old, and will ■ not work in January of this com- ; ing year. I am a painter and work steadily in the other eleven . months. Do I have to notify the , social security office or will they send me a social security check • for January automatically? A. You must notify the social • security office if you wish to claim > benefits for a month in which you 1 do not work. ! Q. I understand that military ’ service can be used in figuring social security benefits. I just obtained a statement of my social security earning, but , toe statement does not give mdanycredit I for my Army service. What should s I do? I A. If your military service was ’ between September, 1940, and January, 1957, you may be eligible for military wage credits. However, these credits do not appear on your earnings record maintained by the social security administration. If you are eligible for them, they will be considered when you claim social security benefits. Base pay from military service in 1957 and later years is i credited to individual social security accounts just like earnings from civilian employment. Q. During 1957 I suffered a back injury in a construction job, and received social security disability benefits effective seven months after the month I became disabled. In November, 1959, I returned to work and it was decided that I was no longer disabled. On July 4, 1963, my condition flared up again. My doctor now states I will not be able to return to work in the future. Will I again be eligible for social security disability benefits and when will such benefits begin? A. You will have to file a new claim for social security disability benefits. Based on the additional medical evidence submitted by your doctor, your case will then be given the same attention and consideration it was when you filed originally. If, on the basis of all the data you are considered disabled, your social security disability benefits will be payable with. the month following the month you became disabled. A waiting period of six months is no longer necessary if you have a new period of disability established within five years of the termination of your previous disability. Q. I am past retirement age and still working, as a carpenter. If I stop working, will my income from Investments affect my right to receive social security benefits? A.— No. The income that will affect the receipt of your social security benefits is earnings income received from employment or self-employment. 5. Q. — I would like to buy a pamphlet dealing with social security, especially the matter of claiming a tax refund (I work for several construction companies and pay social security taxes on wages over the maximum amount). Can you suggest one? A.— Yes, “Social Security Record,” (OASI-93). You don’t have to buy this pamphlet. It’s free. Just write or phone your local
social security district office. 6. Q. — I am an ironworker, but work only six months a year. My earnings, however, are always over the maximum of S4BOO per year. Does this mean I am only getting credit for two quarters each year? A.— No. If you receive total wages of S4BOO, or more during a year, you will be credited with four quarters of coverage. 7. Q. — I am 62 years old and have a wife and two children under 18. If I decide to quit my job and file for reduced benefits under ■ the new law, would my wife and children get benefits? If so, would their payments be reduced too? A.— Your dependents would be 1 eligible for benefits for the first 1 month you would be entitled to re- ! duced benefits. The payments they ’ would receive would be the same whether or not your payment was at the reduced amount. However, ’ if the total family benefits exceed- ! ed $254 per month, then benefits ' to your wife and children would be reduced in order not to exceed . the family maximum of $254. 8. Q. — How many quarters of coverage do 1 need to get the maximum social security payment? I have been a painter all my life and have more than 40 quarters already. A.— Quarters of coverage are used only to determine if a person qualifies for social security benefits. When a person has earned 40 quarters, he is permanently insured and would be eligible to file a claim at retirement age. The amount of benefits, however, is determined by the amount of earnings. Contact your local social security office for the new pamphlet OASI-855. From this pamphlet you will be able to estimate your benefits. 9. Q. — I have a mentally retarded child who will never be able to work or care for herself. Is there any provision in the social .security law for her to draw benefits? A.—• If you have worked under social security long enough to have the required coverage, your disabled adult child may draw monthly paments at the time you become I entitled to retirement benefits. Or, in the event of your death, she ’ may become entitled to survivor’s benefits. 6. Q. — I am only 40 years old, but want to start planning for my > retirement at age 62. Where can I . get information about how to figure > my retirement payments? t A. — The social security leaflet, ' OASI-855, explains how to figure I your benefits, and also explains I social security credits. Your local ■ social security office will be glad i to send you a copy on request. 0“ 0 20 Years Ago Today 0 0 Sept. 21, 1943 — Third war loan bond sales in Adams county went over the $600,000 mark, about 45 per cent of the county’s quota.
