i scored 14 points in the second quarter and went on to hand the Decatur Yellow Jackets their first de- | feat by a score of 22 ; 6. The NEIC affair was played on! ] the Garrett field in perfect, cool I football weather on the Friday the 13th evening. i The biggest “jinx” of the even--1 mg, however, was the one the j Railroaders hold over Decatur ' teams, as this was the 11th conI secutive year that Decatur was I unable to beat Garrett. Gary Warstler, 180-pound halfj back, was a one-man show for GarI rett scoring all three of their ; touchdowns, running for two extra i points, and chalking up a fourth quarter safety when he tackled J Decatur quarterback Dave Anspaugh in the end zone. The opening minutes gave Decatur fans plenty of encouragement as the Garrett eleven took the kickoff from their own 26 and were forced to punt after three plays netted only eight yards. The ball rolled out of bounds on the Decatur 45 and from there the Jackets began a march. Begin March Bill Blythe picked up five yards off tackle, and fullback Buster Melchi slammed 14 yards off tackle to the Garrett 36 for a first down. After two plays, Max Elliott rambled to Garrett’s 25 for another first down. A 15-yard penalty was assessed against the Jackets on the next play for holding, setting them back to the Garrett 40. Anspaugh rolled around right end on the next play and flipped a pass to end Greg Ladd on about the Garrett 15. Ladd was alone but the. catch was . one of those that was ‘ too ; easy,” and he dropped the ball. The drive then died out and Garrett took over on their own 25. Ending the drive fired up the ■ Garrett lads and they immediately - began their first scoring drive. On a third down and seven situation, quarterback Gene Hathaway tossed a pass to Warstler who made a leaping catch over three defenders on the Decatur 41. Two plays later, halfback Dave Steward rambled around right end j to the 24. and on the following play Steward again went around right end. this time to the Decatur 12yard line. An offside penalty on Decatur moved the ball to the seven, and fullback Rick Lewis picked up one yard through the center line as the first period ended. Warstler Scores The Railroaders needed only four seconds of the second quarter to rack up their first score of the night, Warstler crashing around right end for the score. Warstler went through right guard to add the extra point, and Garrett held a 7-0 lead—marking the first time Decatur had trailed this season. After the kickoff the Jackets ran into a fourth down situation needing about half a yard for a first

down. The hike from center was fumbled, however, and Garnett took over on s Decatur’s 38-yard . line Hathaway attempted to pass on the first play, but linebacker Jerry Egly batted the ball into the air, and the pigskin was picked off by Sam Blythe, who was downed on the Decatur 48. A 13-yard gain around right end by Elliott later moved the Yellow Jackets to the Garrett 34, and Melchi boomed off tackle for another 13 yards to the Garrett 21. Melchi picked up three yards in two carries through the line, and Bill Blythe was stopped for no gain off tackle, leaving Decatur with a fourth and seven. Use Interception Anspaugh fired a pass to Ladd but the ball was picked off by Hathaway on about the 12, and be returned it all the way to the Decatur 42 before finally being hauled down by Egly. Moving to the Decatur 28, Hathaway fired a pass to Warstler on the Jacket 11 with 1:13 remaining in the half. Ladd stopped one running play, but Warstler shot around left on a reverse and was stopped on the Decatur one-yard line. The speedy Garrett halfback boomed up the middle of the line on the next play, and then ran the extra point, with 25 seconds remaining, giving his club a 14-0 lead to take to the dressing room at the halftime. , The Yellow Jackets were fired up as the second half opened, and quickly went to work on their first and only score of the night, although they needed a bad pass from center which was turned into a big break. Jackets Get Break Three running plays netted only six yards, starting from the Decatur 16, and Elliott dropped back to punt on fourth down. The pass from center was high, and Elliott couldn’t get his kick away in time. He tucked the ball under his arm, and took off around left end. Moving with awesome power, mighty Max was hit by five or six tacklers, but couldn't be stopped, until he was finally bounced out of bounds on the Garrett 45. Melchi picked up a first down later on the Garrett 31, and on a fourth and eight situation, Anspaugh tossed a screen pass to Elliott and he wasn’t stopped until he had reached the Garrett 19. After John Custer and Bill Blythe picked up a yard apiece through the line. Anspaugh handed off to Elliott and the speedster was off to the races again—this time for a score. Moving around his right end, a block by Melchi sprung him loose and he shook off five tacklers the last five wards to go into paydirt, cutting the Garrett margin to 14-6 with 3:05 remaining in the third period. Anspaugh's extra point kick was plenty high, but off to the right, and the Garrett lead stood at 14-6. Regain Six The Yellow Jackets were now i back in the ball game, but Warstler quickly ended all Decatur I hopes. Ron Smith tried an onside . kickoff, but the ball was downed by a Garrett lineman on the Garrett 48. On the very first play, Warstler shot off right tackle and was long gone—racing 52 yards to paydirt through the entire Decatur team. The extra point try was stopped by Sam Blythe and Ladd, but the extra six points sewed up the cont test for the Railroaders. As the fourth period opened, Garrett was forced to punt from their own 47 yard lihe. Hathaway got off a beautiful punt and the ball didn’t stop rolling until it rested about a foot from the end zone. The Jackets took over there and on second down Warstler nailed Anspaugh in the end zone and added two points and icing to the Garrett victory cake. The opponents continue to get tougher for the Yellow Jackets, as they hit the road next Friday for New Haven and the rugged Bulldogs. The contest will be played on the Woodlan field, near Woodburn. U. S. Davis Cuppers Take Both Singles DENVER (UPI) — The U. S. I Davis Cup tennis team, holding a 2-0 advantage, needed only a victory in today’s doubles match to clinch the American Zone finals over Venezuela. U.S. Capt. Bob Kelleher said he would announce the doubles team one hour before the scheduled match at 4 p.m. EDT. Venezuela will go with their two top men — lyo Pimentel and Orlando Bracamento. The Americans would be overwhelming favorites if the doubles team turns out to be Dennis Ralston, Bakersfield, Calif., and Marty Riessen, Evanston, 111. Both blanked the Venezuelans in Friday’s opening singles matches. Riessen beat Pimentel 8-6, 6-4 and 6-4, and Ralston hammered Bracamento 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2. If the United States wins today, j Kelleher said he likely would use substitutes for Sunday’s concluding two singles matches. This meant Eugene Scott, St. James, N.Y.,and Arthur Ashe Jr., Richmond, Va., would get their first taste of Davis Cup play. High School Football Portland 34, Berne 7. Geneva 7, Woodlan 0. * 50-Yard Line Flashes By Bob Sfyraluka Blaming it onto Friday the 13th would be the easy way. But it wasn’t Friday the 13th which beat the Yellow Jackets last night, it was a hard-charging Gairett eleven coupled with a big letdown by the Decatur eleven that proved fatal. Garrett was a rugged, agressive club, but it appeared that the Decatur lads just fell apart at the seams. Nothing Decatur did last night was very good. For some strange reason the offensive line just quit blocking, after doing a tremendous job in the jamboree and victory over Auburn. The offensive line proved last night what has been repeated thousands of times since football began — that no matter how good a backfield is, you need a good line in front of them. We honestly feel that if Decatur would have scored on that first march that finally died inside the Garrett 30, the complexion of the I contest would have been completely diferent. They didn’t however, and from there on it was all Garrett. Decatur offensive attack without Max Elliott last night just would not have been. Mighty Max was again superb, as he carried what attack Decatur had. Running eleven times, including that spectacular play that began as a punt, the speedster piled up 115 yards rushing for an 11.5 yards-a-carry average. Coupled with the 120 yards rushTwo Brothers Wins In Softball Playoff Two Brothers defeated Adams County Trailer Sales,, 7-2, in a city softball league playoff game Friday evening. Merkle’s single scored two runs in the second inning and the winners added three more in the third on a double by Jones, single by Huston, an error, and Willie Canrad’s single. Singles by Hoopingarner, Hakes, Hirschey and Daniels scored the two Trailer Sales runs in the fourth inning off Lester Linn. Line score: RHE. irg he gained against Auburn, he now has totaled an outstanding 235) yards in only 22 carries in two games. He gained nearly half of the Decatur yardage last night, as the Jackets rushed for a total of 250 yards. Fullback Buster Melchi got 74 yards in 11 carries. The defense was porous much of the time, with the lihe contributing to many long Garrett gains. Hie standout on defense was a sophomore named Sam Blythe, who did a tremendous job. Sambo made 15 tackles, seven more than anyone else on the team. The whole team made 65 tackles — with Blythe’s 15 being about a fourth of that total. Many questions come to mind now. Can the Yellow Jackets bounce back is the biggest one. Things get tougher every week, and New Haven next Friday will be the toughest opponent yet. Can the Decatur boys 'bounce back from last night’s defeat? This is the 64-dollar question. Many, many mistakes made last
