UE Recommends Acceptance Os Pad Following agreement last week on a new contract between the United Electrical, Radio and Machine ■ Workers of America (UE), and the General Electric Co., the union committee has recommended acceptance of the pact by the local unions of the UE, which includes the Decatur union. Hie accord is subject to ratification by the membership. Officials of the UE, which represents 16,000 G. E. employes, s.iid, “the accord was reached when the company agreed to withdraw its insistence upon an arbitration clause as a condition for ecomcnic improvements in a three-year agreement.” As reported in the Decatur Daily Democrat last Saturday, the economic package provides two wage increases of 3.1 per cent and 2.5 per cent, four-week vacations for 20 years’ service and three weeks after 10 years, and other benefits including improvements in pensions, insurance, layoff pay, and vacation pay. The arbitration clause, UE officials said, “the major obstacle to settlement, was removed when the company agreed to a UE proposal that all cases of discipline and discharge be arbitrable, without any exclusions or conditions. The union and the company will continue to negotiate, without any time limit, on an arbitration clause covering questions of interpretation and ' application of the contract. During negotiations, arbitration on other contract issues shall be my mutual agreement only.” Chicago Livestock CHICAGO (UPI) — Livestock: Hogs 5.000; opened steady to strong; closed barely steady; mostly No 1-2 200-230 lb 16.3516.50; sizeable number at 1650; mixed No 1-3 190-250 lb 16.00-16.50; late 16.:;-16 25; 240-270 lb 15.8516.15; 180-200 lb 15.75-16.00. .yr J\ j Jr < Hi Neighbors! Well, I am in kind of a depressing«mood today. As you know one of my originators and creators. Milton Spence, work unit conservationist has now moved from Decatur. He has been promoted to - Evansville. I believe he will have more work in watersheds down there. I can recall many an experience we had together and many of the nice people we met. My first recollection of “life” was the soil structure exhibit Ole Milt assisted one of the supervisors in creating me and iny partner, "Gumbo Jack.” Next was our "land engine" exhibit. Both of these exhibits caused quite a commotion at different fairs and meetings. He always assisted me at these exhibits. He would write my speeches, but as you know, I had to do all the talking. Perhaps I talked to over a hundred thousand people. He would also help me with my weekly newspaper column. So you can see why I am kinda lost without him, for I am just a hired hand working for the district arid I have very little educaton. If it had not been for ole Milt, chances are I would not . have come into existence. =? Some of the other accomplish ments ole Milt may be remembered for are the field days, "drive-it-yourself” tour, thousands of miles of tile and the many structures installed while he was here and this year's 4-H fair “colored TV” exhibit, showing 10 years of progress in Adams county. Os course, he had all kinds of help and the team work he was surrounded with made these accomplishments possible. We all know teamwork is the key to success for all of us. I am sure ’ole Milt would want me to "Thank You” one and all for all the help and co-operation he received while here in Decatur. At the present time the Decatur office does not have a work unit conservationist, but the office is open and we will try our best to help you.
