Three Decatur Men At UE Convention Vernon Hebble, Melvin Wheeler, and Robert Kenworthy are in New York City this week, representing the local UE union, of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine . Workers nf America, in their 28th_ annual international convention. The five-day meeting opened this morning at the Cpmmodore Hotel, and working sessions are scheduled through Friday. 160.000 Workers The UE which represents some 160,000 workers in the electrical manufacturing industry, has made the reduction of the standard work week without loss of pay a key objective in its program to combat growing unemployment in the industry. It has made a Specific proposal of a reduction of 5-houfs in the work week in its negotiations with the companies in the industry. A substantial wage increase, improved vacation and holiday schedules, and earlier retirement at more adequate pensions are also part of the UE program to create more job opportunities, but are supplementary to the basic pl in of cutting the standard work week The US has been sharply critical of the AFL-CIO leadership for its failure to press for the shorterwork week, and has labeled most of the plans developed in AFL-CIO agreements "gimmicks” which fail to come to grips with the basic needs of the people in the age of automation. UE general president Albert J. Fitzgerald will expand on this theme in a radio address on “Opinion” to be heard on station WBAI, New York, Tuesday at 7:15 p. m. Civil Kights It is expected that the convention will kick off a major campaign in support of the civil rights drive of the Negro people Delegates will hear a first-hand ixqxirl on the freedom march on Washington • from UE representatives who were ' part of the large UE delegation 1 which participated in the march ' The union considers are civil lights campaign of the Negro people as vital to the freedoms of all people and especially to working people -1 and as a key part of the' fight for jobs. The union also considers the achieving of complete disarmament and peace as necessary to the solution of the many problems facing working people today. A report of the general officers to the convention states: For Atomic Ban “The three-power accord on an atomic te.ji ban represents, we beheva, aa—important first sh-p m easing world tensons and allmvsus to hope that the terrible threat and crushing economic burden which the cold war has imposed can be lifted, if we increase our efforts to achieve an end to all tests, complete disarmament and a secure peace. “There can be no real and meaningful resolution of any of the problems that working people face, until these objectives are achieved.” Some 300 delegates from UE la-i cals from coast to coast arc exp ted to attend the convention which will also work out a legislative and political action program and map out major organizational objectives and campaigns for the coming year. UE IS one of the few unions in \the country which holds a convention annually and all officers must stand for election every year. Election of general officers is scheduled for the Wednesday session.
