By DAVID NYDICK UPI Education Specialist Adult education programs are a valuable asset to our society. They allow individuals to pursue personal interests with expert direction and instruction. Adults participate for many reasons: to obtain a high school diploma; to obtain a better position; to better enjoy leisure time; as a social activity. There are many opportunities to study cultural, recreational, academic and business subjects? The adult who completes his regular education and is now employed soon finds that there are many areas about which he would like to learn more. He makes an excellent student since he has a genuine interest in learning. There are many community agencies sponsoring adult profl 0 20 Years Ago - Today 0 0 Sept. 7, 1943 — There were 1,412 students enrolled in the Decatur public and parochial schools as classes opened today, an increase oi 94. grams. You should investigate the many fascinating possibilities. Question: I am inquiring about the availability of an adult education course, in art, for a group of young parents. We have checked with our local school system and find that they do not offer and adult courses. We are willing to travel a reasonable distance but do not know how to locate such a class. How should we go about solving this problem? Answer: Adult education programs have expanded rapidly during recent years. Tere are several approaches you might follow. Check with neighboring school, systems, nearby colleges, libraries, and museums. If these institutions cannot meet your needs, try to arrange the course by yourselves. This can be done by contacting the extension division of a college. You possibly could make ah' arrangement with an art teacher from your local school system. You might also perform a community service by requesting your, local board of education to organize an adult education program. If there is sufficient community interest, the board of education may arrange such a program or at least permit the use ol school facilities by outside groups. . , Question: .. I am interested in taking severalcollege courses without enrolling for a degree, I am a high school graduate. Is this possible? Answer: This depends on the college. Some institutions permit individuals to take courses without ci edit or as special students. You should inquire at the college admissions office. Question: My neighbors would like to improve their ability to sjieak English. They also wish to' become citizens of the United States. They have asked me for advice. 1 helped them complete the proper applications for citizenship, but 1 don’t know where they can obtain the necessary education courses. Answer: Your local school system should be able to assit your neighbors. Contact the board of education or superintendent's office. They generally sponsor citizenship courses for adults or will be able to direct you to the nearest sy s tern which does. The courses are usually free, although it is possible that a fee will be charged. You can also check with the Office where the application for citizenship was filed.
SOCIAL SECURITY QUIZ 1. Q — I hired a man to help with the farm work this summer. I deducted too much social security tax from his wages. This man is no longer working for me and I do not know where he can be located. What should* I do with this tax money? A—ls you cannot locate and repay this man by the end of the year, you must send the overcollection to the district director in January. A statement, written on a separate sheet of paper, should be furnished the district director explaining the reason for collecting more than the required amount of tax and showing his account number, name and the amount of overcollection. 2. Q —Some of the workers I hire during the growing season are receiving social security benefits. They request that I not deduct social security from their wages. Even though these earnings are not over $1,200 in the year, -.had I comply with their request? A—No. It is your responsibility to report the wages and pay the full tax. If you pay a farm worker as much as $l5O cash wages in a -year, or if he works on a tune basis on part of at least 20 days during the year, you are oblig itcd to report his earnings, and pay the tax. You may, of course, pay the employee's share of the tax out of your own pocket if you wish.
3. Q—l will be (55 years old in March, 1965. Do I make my last social security payment on my farm earnings in 1964 or do I have to make one more payment in 1965? A—ls you are referring to the self-employment tax, you will continue to pay this tax, regardless of age, as long as you continue farming. If you completely retire, or your self-employment income is not over S4OO a year, you do not have to pay the tax. 4. Q—My brother and I operate a farm in partnership. The partnership hires my 19-year-old son during Uie summer months. Since he is under age 21, is his work covered under social security? I was told that I slid not have to report his wages, but now I have been informed that his wages should be reported. A—The services of a child under 21 in the employ of his father are excluded from coverage under social security. However, services performed by a child under 21 in 1 the employ of a partnership are covered if it is not a partnership composed of both parents. 5. Q —My son is 15 years old and is doing farm work for a neighbor, lie was asked to get a social -sedulity number. Can he get a social security number at his age’’ A—There is no age restriction. If he is working in a job covered by the social security law he needs an account number. He should get an application for account number from his nearest social security office. , 6. Q—How often ma.v I check my social security account to make sure my employers report my earnings correctly? A—You may check it ns often as once a year, and we very much recommend that you check it at least once every three years in order to insure that you can correct your account if an error has been made.' Hardware Storage A plastic ice-cube tray makes an ideal storage “bin" for bolts, screws, washers, and the like. The compartments are deep enough to prevent mixing of the contents — and, of course, much fumbling.
