Duffer's Divots by Dick Reidenbach Democrat Team Champs The Decatur Daily Democrat defeated Morningstar Auto Sales, 8 and 4, Sunday in an 18-hole play*off for the 1963 City golf league championship at the Decatur Golf course. Morningstar’s was the 1962 defending champion. - The Democrat, winners of the first half, and Morningstar’s, second half champs, paired off for the contest at 11:30 a. m. for the championship title. Helm Is Medalist Bob Helm, first man for the Democrat team, was declared medalist for Sunday’s competition. Helm had rounds of 43 - 38 for an 81. Team results were: Bob Helm over Don Elder, 81-83. Helm received a 2-stroke spot for a net score of 79. Stu Schnepf, playing even with Gerald Morningstar, lost 89 - 83. Dick Deidenbach won over Carl Honaker, 82 - 86. Reidenbach had a 4-stroke spot and had a 78 net. John Pfister played Jack Irwin to an 82 deadlock and won the match with a 2-stroke spot for a net score of 80. Smorgasbord Monday The City golf league will conclude its activities Monday with a smorgasbord supper at Villa Lanes at 7:30. Trophies will be presented to the 1963 champions and gift certificates will be awarded to the first four places of both halves at the buffet supper. The evening's affair will be open to all members of the City league teams and Iheir sponsors. All persons attending must have played in eight matches, or may attend the supper through special arrangements. Grid Jamboree This Evening As Bluffton Tickets will be on sale at the gate this evening as Decatur and Berne high schools battle for the first time in gridiron history, in the first annual B’ufftpn jamboree, All tickets, for adults and students, are priced at sl, and those who did not purchase an advance ticket may obtain a ducat at the gates of Bluffton’s Wilson field this evening. Decatur and Berne will collide in the second quarter of the fourteam affair, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p. m. Decatur and Bluffton are the “home,” or white, teams, while Berne and Hartford City are the "visitors,” or dark. At the end of the four quarters the home score will be totalled against that of the visitors. Open At 7:30 Bluffton and Hartford City will open firing at 7:30 p. m., playing the first 12-minute quarter. Coach Wally Yeoman’s Yellow Jackets will then battle Berne m the second quarter, with the ball being put in play at the exact sppt where the first period ended. The “home” or “visiting” team in possession at the end of the first quarter will retain possession of the football. The same thing will occur after the third quarter. ’■ Jackets Continue Play The Yellow Jackets will stay in the fray a second 12 minutes when they battle Hartford City in the third period, after a second half kickoff. There will be a five-minute intermission after each quarter, including the halftime. Decatur’s squad will be seated on the’ south side of the field. Officials “for the jamboree will be Don Hollman of Fort Wayne and George Mihai and Don Shondell of Muncie. Competing coaches in addition to Yeoman are Everett Parks, Berne: Ray Modlin, Bluffton; and Dave Flowers, Hartford City. Large Crowd The jamboree is expected to attract a huge throng, including a, large crowd of Decatur fans anxious to see the new Yellow Jacket offqnse in action. Tonight will also mark the first “firing” of the Booster club's cannon, which will be fired -after each Yellow Jacket scoring effort, as announced at the kick-off supper last week.

New Coaching Staff Guides Yellow Jackets
The Decatur Yellow Jackets open their 1963 football wars in the Bluffton jambqree this evening, under a slightly new and revamped coaching staff. Wallace H. JWally) Yeoman assumes the head reins of the club season in the jamboree this evening. Yeoman takes over the top spot vacated at the end of last season by Bob Worthman. Worthman announced nis retirement last year after guiding the Decatur football fortunes for some’ 16 seasons, in order tnat he may devote full time to the rapidlygrowing duties of his athletic directorship. Yeoman, who was assistant under Worthman last season, was named to fill the head coaching position of the Decatur club. 4 Purdue Grad A native of Rensselaer, Yeoman •is a graduate of Purdue University. He came to Decatur last season after serving as an assistant mentor at Marion high school. squad. Assistant coaches are Jerry Mitchel, Gary Geissler and new addition Steve Brandenburg. Third Season Mitchel is a graduate of Adams Central high school and Manchester College, and is in his third season as a football coach here, working as a reserve coach in In addition to his football duties, Mitchel, who teaches in the Lincoln school, is the junior high and freshman basketball coach. Giessler is a Fort Wayne North Side grad and received his degree at Ball State Teachers college. He too is a returning assistant coach, and is the head wrestling coach in the winter, and assists with the spring baseball team. New Coach Brandenburg is the new addition to the coaching staff, coming here after his recent graduation from Indiana State. The new assistant coach, who is the biggest of the four, is also a Rennselaer native, and played high school football under Yeoman when he was coaching at his high school alma mater. The three assistants will not cnly work with the reserve and freshmen teams, but will spend much of their time with the varsity, and all will be working with Yeoman during games. Merchant League To Open This Evening The Merchant bowling league will begin play this evening at 6:30 o'clock at the Villa Lanes alleys.

Playoff Tonight By United Press International The Indianapolis Indians and the Atlanta Crackers, who finished in a flat-footed tie for first place in the International League’s Southern Division, will square off at Indianapolis tonight in a hastily-arranged one-game playoff. The winner will meet the Syracuse Chiefs, champions of the Northern Division, in a best-of-seven series starting tomorrow night. The loser will play the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Northern Division runer-up, in another best- of-seven set, also starting tomorrow night. Archie H. Smitley Retires At G. E. Archie H. Smitley, 60, has elected retirement under the optional provisions of the General Electric pension plan, effective Sept. 1. He joined the G.E. at the Decatur plant August 4, 1943, and was first employed as a machine repairman. Prior to hfc retirement he received a gift from his coworkers. Smitley, who resides east of Decatur with his wife, plans to continue his hobby of raising canaries. Hymera Man Drowns In Strip Mine Pit SULLIVAN, Ind. (UPD—Henry Wyman Thomson, 51, Hymera, drowned Saturday while, swimming in an old strip mine pit south of Hymera. Thomson and Joseph Hunter, 14, West Terre Haute, had been swimming and the boy went ashore. A witness said Thomson suddenly went under and failed to come up.
