Call Special Force To Aid D.C. Police WASHINGTON (UPD — Officials marshalled a special force of 2,500 men today to help police keep order during Wednesday’s march on Washington by more than 100,000 integrationists. District commissioners said tney would deputize the group of National Guardsmen, firemen and police reservists who will assist 1,900 metropolitan policemen keep order during the mammoth civil rights demonstration. As local officials continued to work out plans to insure that the march would be peaceful, a Southern senator said he would not mind if the march did turn into violence. Sen. Russell B. Ixmg. D-La., said during a radio interview Thursday, that “. . .1 would just a soon the wholet thing broke out into riots, though I am not advocating this. 1 suppose the whole south would just as soon it did get out of hand.” Long conceded, however, that the march “if it is conducted in an orderly manner .'. . might help them some, but if it gets out of hrnd it will hurt their cause.” Long appeared on CBS’ Capitol Cloakroom. All members of Congress have received invitations to attend the rally. However, a Southern senator and a Midwestern Republican faltly rejected the invitations and alluded to the alleged involvement of Communists in the demonstration as the reason. Both Sen. Olin D. Johnston, D-S.C., and Rep. John M. Ashbrook, R-Ohio, said there were Communists working in the organization of the march. Johnston, in a brief telegram to march leaders, said “You should know that criminal, fanati. cal. and Communist elements, as well as crackpots, will move in to take advantage of this mob. You certainly will have no influence on any member of Congress including myself."
