Warren Spahn Sets Strikeout Record Tuesday By MILTON RICHMAN DPI Sports Writer Warren Spahn did it again—simply to satisfy the sticklers and keep them from claiming he was lousing up the record book. The 42-year-old Milwaukee southpaw settled a two-week-long debate Tuesday night when he officially became the all-time lefthanded strikeout king of the major leagues with a career total of 2,383. In a manner of speaking, Spahn had been walking around with an asterisk since July 29 when he fanned five Cincinnati batters and brought his strikeout total to 2,378. Some said that total made him the new all-time left-handed strikeout king, but others said it didn’t. Rube Waddell, former southpaw for the Philadelphia A’s, was the cause of the argument. Two separate record books listed Waddell’s strikeout total at 2,375. Other books listed his total as 2,381. Spahn took care of all the books Tuesday night, however, when he got losing pitcher Bob Miller on a called third strike in the seventh inning for the 2,382nd strikeout of his career. His final strikeout victim was pinch hitter Al Ferrara, who ended the game. Idle Two Weeks An attack of tendonitis had kept Spahn idle since that July 29 contest and in his first game back Tuesday night he scattered nine hits. The Braves nicked Dodger starter Johnny Podres for three runs in the first inning and Denis Menke’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning produced the winning run after Los Angeles had tied the score. Despite the defeat, the Dodgers retained their four-game lead when Cincinnati blanked secondplace San Francisco, 4-0. St. Louis beat Houston, 4-2, in the only other National League contest. Rain washed out the Pitts-burgh-New Yorjc game. Jim Majoney won his 18th for the Reds with a two-hitter against the Giants. Frank Robinson hit his 17th homer with one on and Vada Pinson his 13th with a man aboard off Juan Marichal. The defeat was Marichal’s sixth against 18 victories.

Past members discovered to have been overlooked, will be contacted within the next few days by one of the club's membership committee handling the annual drive. The club reached 175 members last season, and is shooting for 200 this year, although recent membership sales have been somewhat alow. , Jack Macklin and Ray Seitz head fee membership committe, which also includes Chalky Winteregg, Dick Linn, Herb Banning, Jr., Bun Meyer, Don Sprunger, Norm Steury, John Shaffer Jim Cowens, Isch, and a few others. Contact One Anyone who has been a member of the club and has not been contacted as yet is asked to see one of the above-mentioned members of the committee. Also, according to Isch, anyone who would like to join this year should see one of those listed above. “It is impossible to see everyone in the city,’’ Isch explained, “and thus we urge anyone who has not been a member before but would like to join this year, to contact one of the committeemen listed above.” Membership in the club is only •5, which entitles the member to attend two banquets free of charge. The football banquet, for which plans are already underway, will be held after the football season, and is open to members of the club only. The D-Club banquet, near the end of the school year, is open to the public, but a member of the Booster club is admitted free. Lone Source Memberships are the sole source of income for the club, and they defray the cost of the football banquet, the kick-off supper and other club work. In addition, the club undertakes a project each year. Last year's llroject placed a new movie camera in the hands of Decatur high school officials, and has proven as value to a number of departments of the school. Isch explained too that plans are moving ahead for the club’s kick-off supper to get the football season “off on the right foot.” The supper has been tentatively
