High-Scoring Games In Softball League tjhe Decatur Casting Co. whipped .Citizens Telephone Co., 13-9, and McMillen trounced the K. of C. ( 18-9, in a pair of City softball league games played Wednesday evening. The Casting Co. scored twice in the' fifst inning and six times in ; the second and were never headed in their win over Citizens. M. Black had th’:ee singles and a pair of runs batted in, and A. Marbaugh rapped a double and a triple to lead the winners’ attack. L. Marbaugh chipped in with a pair of of doubles. Harding’s single and home run Knocked in two runs for Citizens, and Carr batted in a pair of runs with a fifth inning single. Two home runs by Roger Stevens tod a four-base blast by Jerry Voglewede paced McMillen to its romp over the K. of C. in the nightcap. Steveps hit a three-run homer in the first inning, a two-run homer in the third and a two-run double in the seventh, for a total of seven RBl’s for the veping. Voglewede hit his round-tripper with a -man in, the third. -j-ffip Riuhaphlag hit his second home run in two nights in a losing cause for the K. of C.. and Ron Baker also homered for the losers. Downing Hurls Three-Hitter As Yanks Win
By United Press International A1 Downing strengthened his bid for AL rookie of the year honors Wednesday night when he pitched a three-hitter as the New York Yankees downed the Washington Senators, 9-1. Joe Pepitone hit his 20th homer of the season and Elston Howard his 22nd to lead the Yankees’ 14-hit attack. The Chicago White Sox defeated the Kansas City Athletics, 7-3, The Cleveland Indians beat the Baltimore Orioles, 4-1, the Detroit Tigers nipped the Boston Red Sox, 5-4, and the Minnesota Twins whipped the Los Angeles, 9-4, in other AL games. In the National League, Los Angeles topped Chicago, 3-1, New York beat St. Louis, 7-3, Houston edged out San Francisco, 1-0, Pittsburgh shaded Milwaukee, 5-4, and Philadelphia downed Cincinnati, 2-1. Pete Ward, Downing’s strongest rival for the AL rookie award, hit his 14thhomer and two singles to lead a nine-hit White Sox’ attack that carried Juan Pizarro to his 14th* win against five losses. Pizarro yielded nine hits and three runs in 7 2-3 innings with Jim Brosnan preserving the win. Orlando Pena suffered hi s 15th setback for the Athletics. Homers by Joe Azcue and Fred Whitfield provided the power for Cleveland’s Jim Grant to register his eighth victory of the season with a five-hitter. A double by Woody Held, a walk, A1 Luplow’s single and Larry Brown’s infield out produced the other Indian runs as Milt Pappas of the Orioles was tagged with his seventh defeat. AL Kaline’s three-run seventhinning homer off Red Sox relief ace Dick Radatz lifted Detroit relief pitcher Bill Faul to his fifth win. Kaline also had a double and a single and drove in our runs to lead the Tigers' 12-hit attack while Gary Geiger hit two homers and Dick Stuart connected for a two-run homer for the Red Sox. Harmon Killebrew’s three-run eighth-inning homer gave the Twins a 5-4 lead and relief pitcher Bill Dailey’s shot in the ninth clinched their triumph at Los Angeles after the Angels staked Ken Mcßride to an early 4-0 lead. The homer was Killebrew’s 26th and gave him the league lead. Leon Wagner hit his 22nd homer and Jim Fregosi had four singles for the Angels.

Sandy Koufax Chalks Up Two More Records Vs Chalk up two more strikeout records for Los Angeles fireballer Sandy Koufax today. Koufax struck out 11 batters in the Dodgers’ 3-1, 11-inning triumph over the, Chicago Cubs Wednesday. 1 Koufax’ 11-strikeouts lifted his season total to 210 in 213 innings and made him the first National League left-hander to record three consecutive 200-strikeout seasons. It also was a league record 48th time in which he has’ struck out 10 or more batters in a game. Koufax turned over a tie game to relief ace Ron Perranoski and the latter gained his 11th win of the season when the Dodgers came up with two runs in the 11th inning on Tommy Davis’ homer, singles by Willie Davis and A1 Ferrera and an error by Ellis Burton. The victory enabled the Dodgers to increase their NL lead to six games when the Houston Colts topped the San Francisco Giants, I- and the New York Mets surprised the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-3. The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1, and the Pittsburgh Pirates shaded the Milwaukee Braves, 5-4, in other NL action. In the American League, New York defeated Washington, 9-1, Chicago beat Kansas City, 7-3, Detroit nipped Boston, 5-4, Cleveland topped Baltimore, 4-1, and Minnesota scored a 9-4 victory over Los Angeles. Dick Farrell went 8 1-3 innings and Hal Woodeshick threw a game-ending double play ball to pinch hitter Harvey Kuenn to give the ninth-place Colts their fifth win in their last six home games with the Giants. The Colts scored the game’s only run off Jack Sanford in the fourth inning on A1 Spangler's single, a sacrifice and John Bateman’s single. Jim Hickman hit a homer, triile, double and single and Duke Snider had three hits in the Mets’ II- attack that brought Tracy Stallard his fifth win. Mississinewa Winner Os Summer League Mississinewa won the high school summer baseball league playoff championship recently, defeating Geneva, 11-9, in the third and final game of the playoff series, played at Gas Oity. Geneva took a 4-2 lead after two and one-half innings of the final game, but Mississinewa came up with six runs in the third and three more in the fourth for a 11-4 lead. Geneva rallied for five runs in the sixth inning but relief hurler Collins stopped the Cardinals to preserve the win for Neironimus. Three Geneva hurlers allowed 10 hits, walked five batters, bit two and fanned five, while the Mississinewa pitchers allowed only five hits but walked 12 and fanned six. Mississinewa won the western division trophy and the league playoff trophy, while Geneva, , eastern division champions, was awarded the division trophy. Many units are already lined up for the event, with additional ones expected. The Edgerton Drilletts will perform a precision drill display near the park and the Willshire American Legion will dedicate a new flag tyole and flag at the dose of the parade. Richard Stoner, Fort Wayne, owner of Stoner’s magic and novelty shop, will be featured with a magic show at the evening program, and the Crestview high school band will also entertain. A1 proceeds from the two-day affair will be used for community improvements. Champion Steer Sold To Liechty Cannery Liechty Cannery, Berne, has purchased the 960-pound H e r so r d which was selected as grand champion steer at the 4-H fair. Liechty’s paid $28.40 per hundred for the steer, which was originally purchased at the 4-H auction by the First Bank of Berne for $1 per pound. The animal was raised and sold by 12-year-old Phil Bentz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Bentz. Liechty’s purchased the steer Tuesday evening at the Berne-Geneva livestock sale. The meat will be canned.

Two Brothers Team In Markle Tourney The Two Brothers softball team of Decatur will be one of 16 teams participating in the annual Markle softball tournament. The tournament opens Monday. August 19, at the Markle diamond, where all games will be played. Two Brothers will play SpearDehner, Inc., one of the better softball nines in Fort Wayne, it was learned this morning with the announcement ofthe tourney draw.
