For Parents off Teenagers Probably some Decatur residents are not aware of the widespread problem of teenage drinkers in Adams county. It is, of course, illegal for them to drink in Adams county — you must be 21. Bat in Ohio, it is legal for teenagers who are 18 or older to drink 3.2% beer. Many of the state-line taverns have, in recent months, been running wide-open. There have been many reports of 14, 15, 16, and 1? year-olds, not just Indiana but Ohio residents, served. There have been reports of whiskey being served on Sunday, another violation. In Ohio, the director of the state alcholic commission has started to crack down on those taverns who sell to minors. This is a good thing. It is too bad that the local Ohio law enforcement officers do not take a closer view at the situation. First of all, teen-age drinking is bad for the legitimate business. Second, it leads to many other problems — drunken merry-making that causes wanton damage to property; robbery, breakins, gas theft, unwed mothers, etc. Decatur area parents might just be very much surprised to find out where their young teen-age daughters and sons are spending their time. Some had better check up, because it will certainly be embarassing when they are arrested, and their names are published. And of course it is always possible that Indiana authorities will act on evidence presented to them, and begin a spot-check and arrest program to catch those coming back in violation of the curfew. For in case you are not aware, parents have a powerful weapon in their hands. They can always point out the 11 p.m. curfew to their children, and tell them that they must be home by that time. It is a protection for the child, for the parent’s good name, and for the community. Did you ever figure out how many of our fatal accidents, and how many of oiir other alto accidents, were caused by drivers who had been drinking? This is a bigger problem than lack of seat belts, but harder to legislate about. And drinking teenagers, without much experience, and with plenty of energy and will to live, are even more dangerous. Parents had better { start taking their responsibilities seriously, or they will be in for a big surprise.
