DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT ~ . Published Every Evening Except Sunday by ' THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT CO., INC. Bnterad at the Decatur, Ind., Post Office as Second Class Matter Dick D. Heller, Jr. President John G. Heller Vice President Chas. E. Holthouse Secretary-Treasurer SobßCriptlOD * v. By Mail, in Adams and Adjoining Counties: One year, $10.00; Six months, *5.50; 3 months, *3.00. By Mail, beyond Adams and Adjoining Counties: One year, *U.M; 8 months, *6.00; 3 months, *5.25. By Carrier, *5 cents per week. Single copies, ? cents. Where are they from? Did you ever wonder where the people who shop in Decatur come from ? Merchants are well aware that they have out-of-town customers, but they sometimes wonder just how many, and from where. One of our local merchants had a very suc- • cessful registration during the recent sidewalk sale for merchandise he was giving away. In fact, 926 people registered at his store. He kept a close count, and also on the addresses of his patrons. Os these 926, 678, or about 7/9ths, ware from Decatur. Next largest number was, surprisingly enough, from nearby Monroeville, with 38; Monroe was third with 36, and Fort Wayne, including rural routes, fourth, with 22, in a tie with Willshire, O. Others were Hoagland, 18; Berne, 14; Geneva, 13; Convoy, 0., 13; Ohio City, 0., 10; Celina, 0., 9; Rockford, 0., 8; Wren, 0., 5; Craigville, Ossian, and/Bluffton, 4 each; three from Preble, and one from Pleasant Mills. This will also give local merchants an idea of the area in which it pays to advertise — most of Decatur’s business comes from a rather narrow area around the city, about 12 or 15 miles. Os course there were sprinklings of others — Denver, Col., Portland, Columbia City, San Jose, Calif., (2), La Fountaine, Atlanta, Ga., New Castle, etc, all except one of them with one each, and several others. But hardly enough to pay to advertise there! I And of course it should be understood that these addresses were post office addresses — the people could be from rural routes. In fact, many of the shoppers in Decatur are farmers and their wives, or rural people. The circulation patterns of the Decatur Daily Democrat are practically coincidental with ... those of the buyers of Decatur merchandise. This, of course, is not accidential-people who do business in Decatur, who go to churches in this area, who come here as their seat of government, are the people most interested in finding out what is going on in Decatur, and its environs. They want to find out what goes on in the clubs, what advice is being given to farmers in this area, etc. The want it in writing, so they can refer to it, read over the parts they don’t quite understand at first, and talk it over with their neighbors. In short, they want a local paper that gives them the news they want and advertisements from the shops they patronize.
