Sunshades and Fences Make Patio Areas More Enjoyable

Tarraces, patina, and breezeways are three of the more common areas for outdoor living. Dressing them up for greater utility during the summer months is a very popular pastime. Some of the more practical accessories for pleasant outdoor living, areas are permanent over? head sunshades, solid or partially open trellises, arbors, and fences. Some or all of them in varying combinations and with attractive landscaping will provide a literal bower for family relaxation and informal entertaining. Sunshades that are, or appear to be ; extensions of the roof are often completely covered to provide an area that is secure from showers. An adjacent area can then be covered with an open sunshade that consists of a decorative wood pattern. Vertical sunshades also serve a variety of purposes in outdoor planning. They are often used to set off one area from another, or to provide privacy for part of j,he area. Fencing for Privacy If privacy is an objective, handsome fences in new designs will fullfill this requirement without giving a “fenced-in” feeling. In fact, there are fences that give a measure of protection yet do not completely exclude light and breeze. These are ideal for setting off and area containing a swimming pool. A high fence can be made of vertical planks mounted alternately on the front and back of a framework to keep kids and animals out but let breezes through, or with blocks cut from twofours and put up in an openwork design. Vines and shrubs can be trained against this type of fence to fill in during the summer and give an added measure of privacy. Do-It-Yourself Project Os course, it is possible to engage a contractor to execute any or all Os the plans you make, but most of these improvements can be made by the homemaker who is an amateur craftsman and enjoys wood working. Selection of lumber is important, and should be done with the advice of your local lumber dealer. Since they are extremely workable and widely available, any one of the 11 woods from the Western Pine region will be a wise choice. Remember that care in construction and finishing will pay big dividends in good appearance and long life. All parts that are underground should be treated with a preservative, preferably one that contains penta chlorophenol, to guard against rotting and termites. Exposed ends above the ground should be similarly treated. . When the construction and finishing are completed, don’t forget that filial touch of landscaping; Trees and shrubs are the answer to that barren look and give a lived-in appearance.

How to Cut Down Cost Os Cooling Is the operating cost of your home cooling system higher than your neighbor’s? There may be several reasons for this. The size and shape of your house, landscape around the house, and number of people in the family affect the cooling requirements of a home. For example, a small, square house will have a lower cooling cost than a large, rectangular house. Moreover, an elderly couple living in the same type house that a family with children live in, will probably have a lower cooling cost. Here, according to the National Better Heating-Cooling Council, are some other factors which affect cooling costs: House color for instance dark colored siding attracts much more heat than light colored siding. Thus, changing the house to a lighter color, homeowners can cut down cooling costs by 10 to 50 per cent. Shading, with a 36-inch roof overhang, can reduce cooling costs about .20 per cent. Also, trees shading windows can reduce cooling costs by approximately 15 per cent. , Insulation is extremely helpful in cutting cooling costs. In fact, when insulation is added to a house, cooling costs can drop to half. A similar method of reducing costs is with double glairing for floor-to-ceiling windows, and storm windows left up all year long. Roof design also affects cooling costs.. Generally, a well-Ventilated, pitched roof requires a third less cooling capacity than a flat roof, is given a white marble chip coating, the cooling requirements drop to that of the pitched roof. Carports and garages, located so as to shade the western or eastern walls of a house, can substantially reduce cooling requirements. A STITCH |N TIME .... Be sure to enamel the Woodwork with semi-gloss enamel before applying the flat paint, latex or alkyd, to the walls, says the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association. It’s easier to remove flat paint from thoroughly dried enamel, in case your hand should slip, than it is to remove enamel from flat paint. CHECK LOCAL CODES Building codes in most communities regulate additions as well as new construction. Make certain you and your home improvement contractor are aware of local building code requirements.

The patio, or atrium, house is a single, one-family dwelling which uses an entire lot. Front, side and rear yards are consolidated into one garden area, which is bordered by rooms. The outdoor and indoor areas become one secluded space for living, providing privacy without giving up openness. As diagram (top) shows, patio homes maintain almost the some population density as narrow, old-fashioned, twostory row houses. Sketch (bottom) shows patio house design at William K. Will Civil Rights Hurt Democrats In 1964 Race ?

United Press International Continued bad luck with civil rights could impose severe penalties in next year’s elections on President Kennedy and on the Democratic party. Among the political facts of life are these: —Only under unusual circumstances can a Democratic presidential candidate be confident of election without the electoral votes of most of the southern states. —ln the great industrial states outside the South, all Democratic candidates usually need the Negro vote to be elected. Well-organized movements have developed in five southern states to deprive Kennedy next year oi their electoral votes. The method would be to offer voters slates of unpledged presidential electors. Election laws in Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia have been rewritten to provide for the unpledged slates. The proposal is pending in the legislatures of Florida and Louisiana. These five states represent 53 electoral votes. o House Would Decide If no presidential candidate obtained a majority in the electoral

college—27o votes—the election of a president and vice president would be thrown into the House of Representatives. In that event, each state would cast one voe. Mississippi’s vote would be equal, for example, to the vote of New York or Pennsylvania. The Southerners might be able to make a deal. The one-state-one- vote system would restore to the South some of the political leverage it lost when Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered Democratic National Convention rules changed in 1936. For 100 years the Democrats had required a two-thirds majority for the nomination of a presidential candidate. In practice, the twothirds rule gave the South a veto over presidential nominations. FDR scrapped the two thirds rule, making a simple majority sufficient to nominate. The political Influence of southern states in the Democratic party has been shrinking toward zero ever since FDR’s triumphant second nomination. Political trouble outside the South will fall upon the Democratic party if President Kennedy is unable soon to reverse the disenchantment of northern Negroes

fiberglass Paneling Is Versatile 1 ’ '■ ■' A versatile building material that can be used in any room or area and for a variety or remodeling or improvement projects is reinforced fiber glass paneling. Light in weight and easily handled and installed by do-it-yourselfer or professional contractor, this paneling lends itself to creative use. Among its numerous interior applications are room dividers, screens, windows or shutters, shower enclosures, decorative walls and ceilings, sliding or swinging doors, soffits and cabinet fronts. Because the panels are translucent, dramatic decorative effects can be created by installing them to allow the transmission of natural or artifical light. The light passes through the panels softly. Evenly diffused and without glare. Decorative possibilities of fiberglass paneling have been multiplied by the recent introduction of resigners’ sheets in which various pattern and effects are created by permanently fusing actual leaves, fern, butterflies, gold lace and other fabrics into the panels. Other designs simulate street scenes or colored stained glass. The panels’ decorative and functional features are matched by the advantages of durability and ease of care. They are shatterproof, and moisture, stain and heat resistant. An occasional wiping with a damp cloth or sponge is all the cleaning usually required. The panels may be worked with ordinary hand tools. A fine tooth saW should be used for cutting. Edges may be filed or sanded. 0 ; 0 Modern Etiquette By Roberta Lee o 0 Q. How should the acceptance of a formal invitation to a wedding reception be worded? A. ‘‘Mr. and Mrs. Stephen L. Kendall accept with pleasure Mr. and Mrs. Warren O. Hall’s kind invitation for Saturday, the twentieth of July.” Q. What is the correct reply to make, after you have paid a short visit in someone’s home and that person says, “It was so nice of you to come”? A. You may say, ‘‘Thank you, I was so glad to find you home. Please come and see me soon,” or such pleasant remark. Q. Is it really proper for a young couple to omit the engagement ring until later during their marriage when the man can better afford one? A. There is no question of propriety here. The engagement ring is NOT an essential to a happy marriage. Q. What is the proper manner of introducing one woman to another? A. The younger is presented to the older, as “Mrs. Matron, Miss Younger.” The unmarried woman is introduced to the married, as “Mts. Green, Miss James.” Only if the unmarried woman is obviously much older would this be reversed, with his civil rights performance. Disenfranchised southern Negroes have no muscle at the ballot box. They must take to the streets or put on the pressure with one of their sit-in maneuvers. Southern communities have bden unable to cope with the sit-in technique of Negro protest. Sit-Home Plan A northern Negro sit - home maneuver next year on election day would scuttle Democratic candidates in a great many northern states. It could be deadly to candidates for mayor and sheriff as well as for the big shots running for president, governor or senator. An election day sit-home would be a revenge technique, no more, at the moment of next year’s election. But the long-range impact would be very great if major Democratic defeats in sueh states as New York, Pennsylvania and California could be attributed to a Negro boycott of the polls. The alternative to a Negro sithome protest against Democratic civil rights achievements would be a Negro bolt to the Republicans.. Not likely. There is much Republican sentiment for abandoning northern Negroes to the Democrats to enable the GOP to go after the unhappy white Democrats in the once-upon-a-time so South. Republicans are approaching an agonizing decision on that. CORNER PLANTINGS Angular, uneven property lines can be smoothed and softened with massive plantings or evergreen and deciduous shrubs. SHOWER HEIGHT * A shower bath installation at 72 inches above the floor has been proven to be the most convenient height for most people.

BY ALLAN SWENSON Written for Newspaper Enterprise Ason. Now you don’t have to crowd all your house plants near a few windows. With modern interior decorating ideas, many plants can be grown away from sunlight, with the help of fluorescent and incandescent lighting. Lights also improve the growth of seedlings and cuttings you start indoors. For plant production on a small scale, indoor lights save the work and expense of build a heated hotbed or greenhouse. House plants that thrive and bloom under artifical light include African violets, gloxinias, begonias, impatiiens, geraniums and many others Foliage plants that do better with some added light are coleus and caladiums. Ivy, ferns, dwarf palms and philodendron will do well even with north window light. If grown in a spot so dark they can’t thrive, a spell under artificial light will pep them up. Set them where a room light fixture gives them several hours of light a day. Most of these plants do well beneath “daylight” or “cool white” fluorescent tubes. The new Gro-Lux tubes are excellent. All these tubes provide mostly blue and some red light. For better root growth add an incandescent bulb for red and yellow light. Plan your lighting to provide at least 20 watts of light per square foot. Use a combination of two 40-watt . fluorescent tubes with one 40watt incandescent lamp. Place plants 12 to 16 inches below the light Geraniums and a few other plants should be closer, because they need greater light intensity. Incandescent lamps are hot, so keep them from touching plants. To adjust distance from lights to plants is they grow unevenly, use blocks under individual pots and hang light fixtures by chains for easy adjustment. Heat and moisture are important for indoor plants, too. Set plant pots in a tray of gravel, which will soak water. Most plants perfer a temperature of 55 to 65 or 70 degrees, preferably in the cooler range at night. If air is . dry, glassfront cabinets simplify the works of keeping them moist; Many house plants do well with 14 to 16 hours of artifical light. The same is true of plants outdoors, started from seed or cutt'st SKINNER RETURNS— Lowell Skinner, 32, American who defected to Red China, is returning to United States

o 0 | Household Scrapbook By Roberta Lee 0 0 Odor Chaser Room odors can. be banished for sometime with a spray of cologne squeezed from a plastic condiment bottle. Gleaming Furniture Like a high polish on furniture? Saturate a cloth with equal parts of lemon oil and turpentine, and go over the entire surface of each piece. Wipe off the excess oil with a damp cloth, and polish with a woolen cloth until you’ve achieved that gleam you’re looking for. Broken China An effective china cement is made by mixing a thick solution of gum hrabic in a little boiling water; when this is cold, mix with sufficient plaster of paris and apply immediately to the broken edges of china. Press the pieces firmly together and the china will be K well mended. Cleaning Ivory Ivory objects, all in one piece, can safely be cleaned with soap and water. If several pieces are glued together through, better take a piece of raw lemon, dip it in salt, and rub the surface with it. Let the juice dry on the ivory before you wipe it off with a damp cloth. Mildewed Leather Wipe mildewed leather with an alcohol and water mixture, dry it, and if necessary wash the leather with a sponge well wrung out of mild soapsuds, or with saddle soap. Dry outdoors, or in an airy placd, or with an electric fan. Shoes and luggage can be waxed for protection, but don’t use wax on leather upholstery because clothing will adhere to it. Strengthening Glassware You can render glassware less fragile if you’ll place it in some slightly salted water which you allow to come slowly to a boil, continuing the boiling for a halfhour. The slower the boiling, the hardier your glassware. Draperies When buying draperies, remember that loose-weave fabrics tend to shrink. To avoid having those pleasant style crashes and basket weaves hang short after cleaning buy longer lengths. Or, look for extra-shrinkage hems, which give you an extra tuck that is easy to press out. * Plaster of Paris To harden the surface of plaster of Paris include in the wet mixture a small quantity of gum arabic. It is also possible to harden the surface of a casting by immersing it in a solution of alum.
