Attorney Held For Passing Phony Bill INDIANAPOLIS (UPD— R. Martin Worrell, 67, an Indianapolis attorney, was scheduled to be arraigned before U.S. Commissioner Lawrence Turner, Jr., today on charges that he passed fraudulent $lO bills. Worrell was arrested Thursday night by Secret Service agents and taken to Marion County Jail. He was charged specifically with passing a phony $lO bill at a north side drug store July 8 where he bought a bottle of whisky. When an apparently suspicious sales person tried to check the bill, Worrell walked out without waiting for his change, according to Kenneth B. Hale, the Secret Service agent in charge here. Hale said the bill was “identical” to others allegedly made by a convicted counterfeiter, Gene Alger, whose case is pending in
federal court. “A cautious money handler would have no difficulty spotting this bill,’ Hale’ said. He said the back side “lacks detail, particularly the Treasury Building.’ He said it was printed a “bluish offgreen.” One of Worrell’s law firm partners is the attorney for Alger, who is appealing a 7%-year prison sentence. Hale said less than $2,000 of the bogus money was placed in circulation - before the operation was uncovered. Alger is free on SIO,OOO bond pending appeal: McClung, who admitted his part in the counterfeit scheme, was sentenced to five years in prison.
