WELLS FARGO OVERLAND EXPRESS, the famous old stagecoach of western movies, really thrilled the small children, as they could ride “shotgun” or inside as passengers for a quarter a ride. The pony team made countless trips around several city blocks.—(Photo by Mac Lean)

(■ ■J— —————————————— JOHNNIE KINCAID, featured singer of the evening, made a real hit, especially with the teenage girls, many of whom got his autograph. Not a few of the autographs were written on girls' arms, and those arms will probably be kept unwashed as long as possible to recall the moment of ecstasy of meeting a singing-recording star. ~ ' —. Retail Merchants Thank Sale Leaders A vote of sincere gratitude and appreciation went out today to George Litchfield apd Mrs. Bonnie Warthman from the retail division of the Decatur' Chamber of Commerce for their effort in making Wednesday’s annual “Sidewalk Sale and Wing Ding” the tremendous success that it was. Mrs. Kay Boch. chairman of the retail division, extended the apprec'ation of the organization to Litchfield, who served as general chair* man for the affair and lined up the numerous events which attracted thousands of local and area residents to downtown Decatur throughout the day, and to Mrs. Warthman. Mrs. Warthman handled arrangements for the “Miss Roaring Twenties” contest, which put a fine finishing touch to the day-long program about 9:30 o’clock in l the evening. Sale A Success The gratitude of the retail division also was extended to Ferris Bower, who handled a number of other events for the day. and all other retail members who aided in the success of the sidewalk affair. Mrs. Boch also thanked the merchants who participated in the sidewalk sale; those who donated the many prizes for the “Miss Roaring Twenties” contest, and to •those who sponsored contestants in the contest. a “The fine efforts of Mr. Litchfield and Mrs. Warthman and all othejs who helped, made the Sidewalk Sale a tremendous success,” Mrs. Boch explained Rain Held Off Thousands of persons crowded the Second street area of town during the day. as the weatherman gave the local merchants who hold the affair each year a “break.” Rain was predicted for the afternoon but held off until about 8:30 P- m. And then only a light shower fell and had stopped shortly after 0 o’clock, allowing the crowning of “Miss Roaring Twenties.” The streets were filled for the evening’s program, and only a few persons left when the rains came, as the crowd had diminished only slightly for the crowning of the queen. •• ■."» •* Oiling Sewing Machine After oiling the sewing machine, run a clean blotter through it a few times. Collection Shown In Store Window A collection of old yearbooks and other paraphernalia from the Decatur public schools of the roaring twenties and earlier years is now on display in the window of the Teen Togs store. The collection, which feautres numerous 1 old copies of “Ravelings,” the Decatur high school yearbook, has been gathered from local residents by Mrs. Ted Hill, proprietor of the store. The material for the display was loaned by Mrs. Will Winn;s, Mrs. Chalmer Deßolt, Mrs. Herald Hitchcock, Mrs. Elmer Winteregg, Mrs. Hugh Holthouse, Mrs. Paul Worthman, Lyle Mallonee and Bob Worthman. Athletic Teams Worthman loaned a panel of pictures of early Decatur athletic teams, including a shot of the 1912 Decatur basketball team, Decatur’s first. Players on that team were Cy Vail, Robert Peterson, Dan Tyndall, Sherman Beery, Frank Lose, Kenneth Vancil and Joe McConnell. Coach of the team, which won 11 games and lost 13 that year, was Martin Worthman. There are also pictures of football, baseball and track teams. The window display includes every edition of “Ravelings” from 1920 to 1935. The books include pictures of classes and groups at the high school during that time. There is also a copy of “Deeds and Misdeeds,” a booklet issued by the Central school students. Old Desk The window also has an old desk, which was used in the Central school building. On the desk are two books donated by Mrs. Winnes. One is an arithmetic text published in 1848 and the other i$ a fourth grade reader printed in 1880. There are pictures of several of the old school buildings, including the Lincoln school, the old Central school and the first gymnasium, which was located at the present site -of the Moose home. There are also several large photographs in the display depicting such persons and events as a class play, the class of 1922 and an early General Electric girls’ basketball team. Goldwater Declines Television Debate NEW YORK (UPD—The governor of New York said yes, but the senator from Arizona declined the offer ,on grounds that it might contribute to disunity in the Republican party. And so Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller and Sen. Barry Goldwater will not be swapping opinions in a television debate. The two leading contenders for the 1964 GOP presidential nomination were invited by the Columbia Broadcasting System to spend an hour of air time discussing the role of the Republican party in next year’s election.
