American Spacemen Have Time For Fun

By ALVIN B.WEBB Jr. United Press International CAPE CANAVERAL (UPl)’'— The Russians are beating the United States in manned conquest . of space—but it> a safe bet they aren’t having half as much fun ; at America’s No. 1 spaceport at Cape Canaveral is tension laced with tomfoolery—a strange place where strange things might be expected to happen. They do. Like the time a Mercury astronaut spiced up an otherwise boring “dry run” by suddenly clutching at a gantry elevator and * yelling: “No! I don’t want to ’ go!” The nation’s press was on hand for that one. Or the evening the U.S. Navy managed to lose a boatload of newsmen at sea for an hour when < four officers were unable to find the port from five miles offshore. But none of it quite matched the recent evening when the Fenwick Aeronautics and Space Ad--1 ministration (FASA) came to town, recruited virtually everyone • from U.S. astronaut L. Gordon Cooper Jr. on down, and laid ; claims to beating both Russia and America to the moon. But from Cooper on down, those spaceporters whose lives are wraped in and around missiles, rockets and space travel found it a .delightful spoof of their daily headaches and heartaches. It was perhaps the type of fun that “outsiders” rrugfit find’ hard to comprehend, amid the scientific faa^oura.,'ftorr tune that is Cape CariavCEaL ' : , u—-; ■■■-'• But the Cape isn’t a plice you would want to live just for fun. After the initial glamour wears off—and it invariably does—it takes a high degree of dedication to keep a top-grade scientist or technician or missile worker here to put men and machines into space. Burned Food If food has burned in an enameled pot, put three or four raw potatoes, skins and all, into the pot, cover with water, and let simm&r, until only an inch of water is* left. Refill and repeat three times; then let stand overnight and scour with scouring powder. Or, if the burn is mild — and this applies to enamel or aluminum — fill the pan with cold water, set it in a larger pot full of cold water for a few hours, then scour it.
