Fight Games Top Manager Dies Sunday MIAMI. Fla. (UPD— Throughout the boxing world today the bell was mournfully tolling “ten" for Jack (Doc) Kearns, the fight game’s most fabulous manager, who died here early Sunday in his. sleep. Jack Dempsey and others among the eight world champions who had been managed -by 80-year-oid Doc phoned or messaged their eondolances to members of the family. rDempsey. 68, who teamed with Kearns and, the late promoter. Tex Richard, in ithe Roaring Twenties to produce the first mil-lion-dollar fight gate,, assured over the phone from New York: “I'll fly into Miami Tuesday afternoon." - j. Services were tentatively scheduled for the Philbrick Funeral Home in nearby Coral Gables, Fla,, at 10 a m. Wednesday. Changes Name Dpc was given the baptismal name John Leo McKernan shortly after his birth at Waterloo, Mich., Aug: 17, 1882. But : later when he became a professional boxer i n the Far West, he shortened the name to Jack Kearns. And it was Dempsey who gave him the nickname of Doc because Kearns knew so many prescriptions for blood-stop-pers fdr cuts and for limbering oils used in rubdowns. » Kearns recently estimated that he had managed more than 500 professional boxers and that “since nearly all of my boys were good earners, I figure their total purses must have exceeded S4O million, and that my share was about sl3 million.” Tie paused then and added. “And you’d never believe a man could go through that much money.” Kearns, the real “golden boy” of boxing. said heavyweight ehampion Dempsey’s ptirses and other earnings totalled-about sl9 million, and that the money registered by Mickey Walker, former welterweight and middleweight champion, approximated $6 million. 11l Since March Doc, spry and wiry in his 80th year but somewhat withered and stooped, was taken ill at Los Angeles in March —but he returned to Miami, where he underwent a month’s hospital check-up. Then he went to the home of his son, Jackie —a Miami fireman and one of the nation’s foremost skin divers.' It was at Jackie’s home where he fell last week while trying .to walk into the yard and broke his right wrist. Sihce' that injury he had been confined to bed. where his son found him dead Sunday morning. International League Northern Division W L Pct.
