Escapes From Fire In Bedroom Today Alvin Hackman, 22-year-old Decatur resident home on leave from the U. S. Navy, escaped a fire in his bedroom at the home of his mother early this morning without being burned. Hackman was rushed to the Adams county memorial hospital
after escaping the blaze, and was placed in oxygen due to a large amount of smoke inhalation. He was removed from the oxygen tent late this morning, however, and his amending physician reported that he did not suffer any burns. Hackman has just returned home on a 17-day leave and was staying with his mother, Mrs.' Christina Hackman, at 226 N. Ninth St. The fire broke out in his bedroom and the fire department was

called at 3:45 a.m. today, and battled the blaze for some time before leaving the scene at 5:20 a.m. - Damage To Bedroom The fire was confined to the bedroom and a closet in the upstairs of the home. The bedroom was heavily damaged, and the fire burned through the roof of the building and one of the walls. The upstairs also received water damajje, as did a portion of the downstairs. No one else was injured by the blaze. The bed was most heavily damaged and it is believed that Hackman have fallen asleep while a cigarette was burning, and that the cigarette started the fire. He was unable to remember anything concerning the blaze a short time after the fire, and had not been questioned again at noof today. . Adams Central Dept. Rated First Class The vocational agriculture department of the Adams Central high school has been classified first class, according to an an-, nouncement received by Philip E. Souder, superintendent of the Adams Central schools. This rating is the “highest possible achievement based on the total program offered by vocational agriculture. H. B. Taylor, state supervisor Os agricultural education, recently approved first class ratings for 64 departments in the state, an increase of nine over last year. There are approximately 300 departments of vocational agriculture in Indiana. To receive this rating, a department must* have a satisfactory farming program for each high school student, have an approved i farm shop and an active Future Farmers chapter. There must also be an approved evening class program for both young and adult farmers. Reference materials, course of study, classroom facilities and time schedules must meet certain high standards. Martin Watson is the vocational agriculture teacher at Adams Central high school, with Carl Honaker as principal.
