I Wisdom • UM WSH | The Sunday school teacher had been telling her young class about 1 the Christians who were thrown 1 to the lions. Then she showed them a picture of the scene and 1 one little boy seemed very much ; disturbed. When the teacher him 1 what was the matter, he said, 1 “That poor lion didn’t get any 1 Christian.” 1 Dr. Edward L. R. Elson, pastor of the National Presbyterian 1 church in Washington, D.C., has posed the following pertinent questions : “We have great light, but what are we doing with it? We have more speed, but where is it carrying us? The method of news transmission is hundreds of times faster that it was a century ago, but what is the news that is being carried over these facilities? We have multiplied horsepower into atomic power, but in what state has that left the. world? The nations which were successful in perfecting it now recoil from it. The other nations have nightmares because of it. We thought 1 we were making progress. We made material thing our God, but, behold, we have awakened to the realization that our hortie- : made gods are not powerful . enough to save us, but are poweri ful enough to destroy us in short i order. Thus many are beginning to retreat from the god they have . made and to lift their eys to the God who made them.” -

A HAPPY HOME American children and their parents should be more familiar with the history of this nation so that they may understand that our “inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” were bought with a great price of blood, sweat and tears that this nation under God should be the land of the free and the home of the brave. Daniel Webster one said, “God grants liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it.” Again and again this freedom has been challenged and men of every generation have been called upon to defend it in one way or another. There is a price of freedom. Even though we have inherited it, we must prove ourselves worthy of it in order to keep it. So many of our rich blessings are taken for granted and on the anniversary of the birth of our nation, it behooves parents to emphasize anew to their children their rich heritage of freedom to learn, freedom to work, freedom to play, freedom to achieve, freedom to worship, and with this freedom, there is the responsibility to prove one’s self worthy of such a heritage.

A new organization, the International Christian Broadcaster, was started after the 20th annual meeting of the National Religious Broadcasters. It is made up of the NRB and the World Conference on Christian Communications. A campaign started last autumn by the Norwegian lyble Society to place a new copy of the Scriptures in every Norwegian home has already shown impressive results. Last year’s sales of full Bibles, the society reported, totaled 42,186. This was an increase of 7,770 over 1961 sales. A church-related 4-year liberal arts college on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii, is being planned by 4 major Protestant denominations in Hawaii. A steering committee of Episcopalians, Presbyterians and Methodists and members of the United Church of Christ, has been formed to raise funds and select a site for the $6,000,000 college. Each of the denominations is expected to raise $500,000 on the national level, while the local community will be asked to contribute $4,000,000 and the college’s site. The Arizona House of Representatives has memorialized Congress to stop printing and to withdrew from circulation all $1 bills that do not bear the' inscription, “In God We Trust.” Reason given by the Arizona legislature: “It appears that the use of currency without the inscription ‘in God We Trust’ give aid and comfort to ’ those nations which pursue the atheistic Communistic ideology.” In 1955 Congress enacted a law providing for the inscription to be included on all currency as the dies for printing then in use were replaced by new ones. According to the Arizona memorial, the Treasury Department is still printsome $1 bills without the inscription. 4 CLERICUS SAYS CLERICUS SAYS: One cannot live with the knowledge that God is Creator, Sustainer and moral Governor of the universe without sensing that a man and his are very precious in the sight of God. The world was the purposeful creation of a God who is the fountain of all . life. God, who set the world in motion and created man, did not leave the world to chance. God brought order out of chaos because He was concerned with the future and happiness of man. Man is akin to everything that exists in this world and we should be challenged to integrate ourselves and our society with God’s Great Design of the Universe. CHURCH FORUM WHO MADE THE FLAG? A flag was raised over the . Jamestown worsted mills. From the owners of the mill itself it was learned that: the flag was made of wool from American sheep, sorted by an American, ’ carded by an Italian, spun by a ’ Swede, warped by a German, i dressed by an Englishman, drawn , in by a Scotchman, woven by a ’ Belgian, supervised by a French- , man, inspected by an American, I scoured by an Albanian, dyed by I a Turk, examined by an Irishman . and pressed by a Pole. The Church Invites You. The foundations of this nation have been laid deep in the Christian religious and spiritual tradition. Our founding fathers gave their best in thought, faith, life, character and consecration to keep “This nation under God.” Our American ideals of freedom, brotherhood, philanthropy ahd government have “no sense," as General Eisenhower has said, “unless they are founded in a deeply felt religious faith.” The signers of the Declaration of Independence pledged their faith in "God as Creator” and “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence.” America should never stray from those spiritual principles that gave it birth, for if it does, it will become the America of the past—not the future. The church is dedicated to the nurture of spiritual growth of the people of the nation. WHY NOT ACCEPT THE INVITATION AND COME TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY? •” THE BETTER WAY AMERICA FIRST “Not merely in matters material, but in things of the spirit. Not merely in science, inventions, motors, and skyschapers, but also in ideals, principles, character. Not merely in the calm asser. tion of rights,. but - in' the glad assumption of duites. Not flaunting her strength as a giant, but bending in helpfulness over a sick and wounded world like a Good Samaritan. -Not in Splendid isolation, but in courageous cooperation. Not in pride, arrogance and disdain' of other races and peoples, but in sympathy) love, and understanding. - Not in treading again The old worn, bloody pathway which ends inevitably in chaos and disaster, but in blazing a new trail, along which, please God, other nations will follow, into the. new Jerusalem where wars shall be no more. Some day some nation must take that path — unless we are to lapse once again into utted barbarism — and that honor I covet for my beloved America. And so, in that spirit and with these hopes, I say with all my heart and soul, ‘America First.’ ” — Bishop G. Ashton Oldham.
