Effect of Heatwave While Decatur’s late-June heatwave has been very pleasant for those attending the Redmen’s street fair this week, most of the farmers have their hay made, and would just as soon see a little rain. Yards and gardens are beginning to dry up, too. and no doubt some of the gardeners are already prudently watering. >• ■ / It won't be many days until we find 'out just how mUch of a water supply Decatur has! For. the past several years, the city water department has rested the wells more frequently, and in that way, assured ample water for ordinary usage. In fact, we claim to have enough water for a fair-sized industry. But we haven’t had any serious droughts to test this. So we will just have to wait and see. Many Decaturites feel that an ample supply of water is the biggest question facing future city administrations. That problem, plus drainage, will probably edge out streets for awhile, since most of the streets have been repaired with the funds remaining _in _the --light -department .account when the plant was sold and material disposed of, and from interest on the $925,000 invested principal. Decatur’s deep w’ell water is chock-full of minerals, too, posing problems for most industrial users, while properly processed reservoir water would not have as high a mineral content. ■ > ■ ■ . & Those who feel that flouridation is dangerous should certainly favor the resorvior idea, since 1 Decatur’s deep-well water has natural flouridation far in access of any proposed amount to be added to water supplies. Reservoir water would probably be almost flouride-free.

Ear Corn Storage Is Highly Modem Ear corn storage can be as modern as any other corn handling system. “A scoop shovel just isn’t needed with our storage except for, scatterings,” Bob Isch, Adams county, told “Indiana Farmer” >n the July issue. “I can move cut 150 bushels of ear corn in ten minutes with tile front end loader on my tractor.” Bob, who is tenant for L>. M Bnsche, farms 395 acres near Monroe, including approximately 240 in corn, 60 in. soybeans, and 47 in wheat. He feeds 130 head of cattle annually and farrows 35 sows twice a year. nils ear corn storage, built in 1961, is a 28 by 80 foot building

complete with portable drying ducts. It has a storage capacity of 12,000 bushels. Two fans in this new storage kick air through the wet corn with the bigger unit, 7Vi horsepower, handling the bulk of the drying load. This is a permanent unit. A portable 3 horsepower auxiliary fan is mounted at the other end of the center duct system’ as the last few thousand bushels are being stored. The building could be converted to shelled corn or utility building with little extra investment. Bob adds other advantages /to the system. He now s farts pfi’king at 28 per cent moisture, often a full ten days ahead of schedule. i “I'm not getting the shelling losses I once did,” Bob said, “and down corn is not nearly the problem it once was.” Also, Bob can ’keep those cobs. He prefers ground ear corn for steers. This he has with his modern ear corn storage system.
