Max Beats Cardinals For I Fourth In Row ; By United Press International Sandy Koufax’ left index finger has come around so well that he now uses it to form a circle with his thumb. * That’s the sign everything is perfect again and it also could be a sign the Los Angeles Dodgers are on the way to their first National League pennant since 1959. Koufax’ finger probably cost the Dodgers the pennant last year when a circulatory ailment in it forced the left-handed fastbailer to the sidelines during July. But the digit doesn’t seem to be bothering him now and if there’s any question about it, Koufax can point to his record of 11 victories against only three defeats. He pitched the Dodgers within a game-and-a-half of first place Friday night when he beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 for his fourth victory in a row. Koufax struck out nine and had a four-hit shutout going until the . ninth when a single, a walk and Tim McCarver’s two-out homer brought reliever Ron Perranoski in from the bullpen to get the final out. Davis Hits Homer Bill Skowron singled home two ’ runs in the first inning off loser > Curt Simmons (7-3) and after the ■ Dodgers added another run in the ’ seventh, Tommy Davis drilled a t two-run homer in the eighth for what proved to be the decisive margin. The Cardinals, however, still j retained their half-game hold on , first place when the Milwaukee ' Braves beat the second-place San Francisco Giants 6-3. Cincinnati • made it four 1n a row with a 3-0 { win over Houston, the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5, in 10 innings. Get Only Three Hite The Braves were held to three hits by the Giants but still won despite Orlando Cepeda’s 13th and 14th homers. Milwaukee I clinched the game with six runs in the fifth. Joe Torre’s homer and Lee Maye’s three-run triple were the key blows. Tony Cloninger was the winner and Bob Bolin the loser. Jim Maloney gained his 11th victory for the Reds with a fourhitter over the Colts. Loser Ken Johnson matched Maloney until the eighth when the Reds rallied ’ for all their runs. Bluffton Site For Ball State Course Bluffton will be a site for Ball State Teachers College extension courses for the fall term, starting Sept. 9, if the necessary 16 people enroll for the proposed classes by Aug. 12. Art 522, Recent Trends in Art Education, and 525, Mental Hygiene, both four-hour courses, will start Monday, Sept. 9. To ' establish either class, 16 people must register for it at the registrar's office on or before Aug. 12. Fine And Sentence Suspended By Judge 'Robert Truesdale, Wren, 0., was fihed S3OO and costs and given a 90-day jail sentence in Van Wert city court on a theft charge filed by Leo Burk. Acting Judge Sumner J. Walters suspended the fine and jail sentence on the condition of good behavior by the the defendant.

I don’t want him to lose his sharpness.” Outwardly calm but inwardly crushed after failing to notch his 300th victory in his initial comeback try, Wynn quipped “it isn’t the end of the world, gents,” even if it must have felt like it to him. Signed Three. Weeks Ago The veteran right-hander, signed by the Indians three weeks ago after being cut loose by the White Sox last fall and failing to regain a berth with them this spring, puffed and perspired through a scoreless eightinning duel with Juan Pizarro Friday night. Wynn held the White Sbx to six hits until Floyd Robinson opened the ninth with his third single of the game and moved around to third on a passed ball and a sacrifice. Calling on all his craftiness, Wynn then made Dave Nicholson his fifth strikeout victim of the game but Ron Hansen followed with a home run over the left field fence for the only runs of the contest. It marked the fourth time Wynn had been frustrated in his effort to become the 14th pitcher in major league history to win 300 games. He tried three times in vain with the White Sox last season and Ijad remained in training four months for Friday night’s effort. The victory boosted the secondplace White Sox one game behind the league-leading New York Yankees, whose seven-game winning streak was snapped by the Boston Red Sox 7-4. Ends Losing Streak Detroit ended its 10-game losing streak and posted it s first victory under new manager Charley Dressen with a 6-4 decision over Kansas City, Minnesota took the first game of a twi-nighter from Baltimore 5-2, but lost the nightcap 10-2, and the Los Angeles Angels shaded the Washington Senators 1-0. In the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3, the Cincinnati Reds shut out the Houston Colts 3-0, the Milwaukee Braves defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-3, the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1, and the Chicago Cubs edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 in 10 innings. Frank Malzone boosted his batting mark to .343 when he collected two hits and drove in three runs for the Red Sox in their victory over the Yankees. Dick Stuart also aided Bill Monbouquette to his 10th triumph by driving in three runs on two hits.
