Cardinals And Geneva Win In Pony League Geneva and the Decatur Cardinals were victorious in Pony League play Wednesday evening at Worthman field, the Geneva nine downing the Braves, 10-8, and the Cardinals rallying to edge the Cubs, 5-4, in eight innings. The winners scored three times in the opening inning, but the Braves came back in their half of the first to score four times and take the lead. Geneva came back to regain the lead with three six-the-inning runs, and after the Braves narrowed the margin to 6-5, Geneva scored another three runs in the sixth inning and held on so rthe victory. Rap 11 Hits Geneva pounded out 11 hits off two Brave hurlers, Buckingham leading the way with three singles in four trips. Armstrong chipped in with, a double and a single and Dubach added a pair of singles. Nick Smitley, who was credited with the loss, had a run-scoring triple in the first inning and a lead-off home run in the fifth inning for the Braves. In the second contest, the Cardinals scored four tames in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings, and then won the contest in the eighth. Burger Triples Steve Burger poked a two-run triple with one out in the seventh to cut the Cub lead to 4-2, and came home on a wild pitch. Dave Mankey walked and Dave Baughn was hit by a pitch, and Dave Anderson followed with a single to tie the score. A single by Smith and infield singles by Greg Litchfield and Burger loaded the bases in the eighth inning with one out, and Mankey drew a walk to force home the winning run. Dave Hackman’s ground out brought home the first run for the Cubs in the initial inrwng, and Dan Kable’s single in the third scored Bill Brown from second base. Kable walked in the fifth and Hackman singled, and after two were out, Doug Spaulding drove both home with a single, giving the Cubs a 4-0 bulge at that time.
