Fag Tax Director Swamped By Mail INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — State cigarette tax director O. Ray Olson was literally snowed under today by an avalanche of mail from “honest” merchants. Olson said he was amazed that an honor system aimed at collecting a one-cent per pack increase in the cigarette tax which became effective last Saturday had produced such speedy and voluminous results. More than 8,000 letters containing payments came in Monday and this morning, and Olson anticipated another 5,000 this afternoon in the next mail delivery. He estimated the letters averaged $3 payment for a total of $24,000. They came from retailers and others and the payments were based on a penny a pack inventory on hand when the increased tax became effective June 1. Olson said all distributors of cigarettes were provided with forms and were asked to pass the forms on to their customers. The customers, in turn, were asked to send in one cerit for each pack of smokes On hand at the time the tax was hiked. - Olson said it was an “honor system” and the results was “wholly unexpected.” He expects as much as $400,000 from cigarettes on hand at the time the tax hike went into effect. , The bulk of the money will come, he said, when the big chain stores start reporting. These were likely to come in around the 15th of this month. — One envelope had only 14 cents in it. Others had somewhat larger payments, averaging about $3 each. Hie flood of mail quickly swamped Olson’s office help and he borrowed some clerks from other offices of the state revenue department. Charge Postal Clerk With Embezzlement INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—A Leba. non postal clerk was free on $2,000 bond today on a federal charge of embezzling S7OO in postoffice funds.

Burress vanished, authorities said, on May 22 when postal inspectors asked for his postal records and keys to his cash box. Motorist* Is Fined On Speeding Charge James L.
