DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT Published Every Evening Except Sunday by THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT CO., INC. Entered at the Decatur, Ind., Post Office as Second Class Matter Dick D. Heller, Jr. President John G. Heller Vice President Chas. E. Holthouse Secretary-Treasurer Concerning Integration The sudden awakening of the Negro race in the United States to its legal and moral rights is taking many Northerners, as well as Southerners, by surprise. It is all very well for {indignant Northerners to cry “for shame” about the treatment of Negroes in Alabama and Mississippi, but the truth of the matter is that Negroes are no better treated or welcomed right here in Decatur than they are in Jackson, Miss. If we tell others what is right and wrong in race relations, we are only hypocrites of the worst type if we allow motels or restaurants right here in Decatur to practice illegal, and immoral segregation, or outright rejection of Negros. And that has happened here quite recently, as many are aware. In both cases, the Negros were not penniless itinerants, but substantial, talented people who would be welcomed into any educated home. If we are going to raise our voices in righteous indignation about the treatment of Negroes, many of whom are uneducated and whose parents and grandparents were uneducated, who are nearly equal in number to their better-educated white neighbors, then we had better be prepared to accept some responsibility for our actions. If we are ready to “desegregate”. Decatur by accepting a group of, say, 200 or 300 Negros, of integrating them into our activities, schools, churches, clubs, businesses, etc., then we can criticize others for not doing the same. But until then, perhaps we had better search our own souls so rremoval of the log before we examine too closely the mote of our neighbor’s eye!
