Smith Resigns As Coach At Berne-French Bruce Smith, Adams county’s! most successful basketball coach j the past three years, announced! his resignation Monday as head basketball and baseball coach at Berne high school. The announcement ended much speculation s’ince the end of the recent basketball season as to whether or not Smith would return as Berne coach next season. Smith may well be the most successful basketball coach in Adams county history, as his Berne teams won three sectional titles and two regional crowns in his short tenure. His overall record in three seasons is 67 wins and only 12 i losses. At present Smith’s future plans are not definite, although it appears he will not be a part of the coaching field next season. He will probably enter Indiana University this fall to work on his doctor’s degree. Came From Vevay Smith came to feernd’from Vevay high school in southern Indiana in 1960. His first Berne roundball quintet lost only two regular season games and won the county, sectional and regional titles, and also copped the first encounter of the Fort Wayne semistate tourney, before losing to eventual state champ Kokomo 'in the evening round. The following year, 1961-62, -Smith’s Bears won the county and sectional titles, but were nipped ■ by Angola in overtime in the open-: ing game of the regional. This past season Smith coached Berne to the Columbia City holi- < day tourney championship, and I sectional and regional laurels, before losing the afternoon game of the semi-state to eventual state runner-iip South Bend Central. Smith also served as head baseball coach and last season was assistant football and track coach. His teaching duties included physical education and driver’s training. Exhibition Game Today Is Postponed A scheduled exhibition game be- ; tween the Cubs Pony League team j and a Van Wert club, to be played ; this afternoon, has been postponed I due to rain. Cub team members | are asked to report to McMillen Field at 4:30 p. m. Wednesday.
