BY ALLAN SWENSON Written for Newspaper Enterprise Assn. When you order or buy seeds or plants, it . pays to look for the | best. The best are not necessarily 1 the most expensive. But they aren't the bargain-price material, either. Look for hig quality, products, true to name. Most plants and seeds of quality are grown by specialists in the business. You can buy plants and seeds almost anywhere today. Go to the specialist who buys from specialists, if he doesn't grow the items himself. Check comparable quality anywhere you buy. Seeds can be purchased in packets in almost any hardware, department store or general store, as well as in garden centers. You can get seeds by mail from the person who specializes 'in just a few kinds of plants, or from the large seed companies which grow a full line. Today’s Home ‘Supermarkets’ Suit Families Big or Little Variety is the keynote of this year’s electric refrigerator-freezers. There's variety IfTsize. shape, style, Intel ior arrangement of storage space—and exterior finishes. There’s a 1963 electric refrigerator-freezer to suit every newlywed, large family, retired couple, bachelor, or bachelorette among the estimated 3,815,000 units to be shipped by the manufacturers this year.
Some of the new ones have extra-'?' karge vertical freezer and refrigerator sections side by side, while other HioJels have roomy, zero-zone freezer sections either above or below the refrigerator sections. Inside all of them there’s plenty of storage tpaee, with even the doors lined with •helves for containers large and small. More efficient, thinner insulation has added storage space inside the pew units without increasing outside measurements. Doors may be right or left hinged and are mounted for easy clearance so no space is -.seeded between the unit and a side wall. Backs also fit snugly against the wall. As for ice cubes, you can have : them any way you want. Automatic Ice makers, roomy ice storage bins, self-filling ice trays, and standard ' ice trays that can be emptied at the ' flick of the hand are available in 1 VJricus models. zone freezer sections hold many pounds of food, either home-cooked or commercially prepared, at top quality fpr months. Refrigerator shelves, meat containers, crispers, and freezer baskets and shelves glide or swing out for easy access to contents. In some models, swing-around shelves in the refrigerator section not only revolve within the unit, but can also be taken out and used as serving trays. Many shelves are adjustable vertically to accommodate odd-shaped packages. The bugaboo of defrosting can be a thing of the past if you choose. In some electric refrigerator-freezers frost never forms at all. Others defrost automatically, and still others require only the flick of a switch for defrosting. With no frost in either the refrigerator or freezer section, labels on frozen food packages can always be read, the containers never ' %tick together, and frost never steals storage space. New designs and exterior finishes make the 1963 electric refrigeratorfreezers attractive as well as efficient. Exteriors may be white, pastel yellow, pink or aqua, or coppertone. Some have optional panels custommatched to your kitchen. Like a supermarket in the kitchen, the new electric refrigeratorfreezers will save time and shopping trips and will keep fresh foods at your fingertips.

Movable Shelves Make Storage More Convenient. w L Door shelves in this new electric refrigerator-freezer are adjustable to suit the housewife’s food storage needs, and cheese and butter compartments flip open at the push of a button. These are among the features that make the 1963 models more convenient. They also hold more food and keep it fresh longer. PREVENT SPLITTING To keep the fare edge of a board from splitting off while you're planing across the end grain, clamp board in h vise with a piece of scrap tight against it. Any splitting will occur on the scrap. USE FOR CLAY Two lumps of modeling clay make a wonderful holder when soldering or glueing two small awkwardly shaped pieces. Just push each part into its lump of clay, then line up in the desired position. Streaky Furniture on the furniture, it’s usually time to remove the old Wax that’s gotten mixed with dirt and has collected on the surface. Mild soap and lukewarm water, will serve the purpose, but don’t let the soap remain on the furniture for any length of time. Be sure, also, to polish or re-wax the furniture immediately after washing. SAWING “SANDWICH” Clamp a thin sheet of plastic to be sawed between two pieces of scrap plywood to prevent chattering, chipping or tearing.

' -- I * ■L jiiiimHl g~iiiiiiig|| J I EL - 77 ' ■ 1 ... 1/ This electric refrigerator-freezer enjoys just the right position in the kitchen. It’s near a door (not shown), has counter space beside it for unloading groceries, and is well within “walking distance” of range and sink to spare homemaker from extra steps.
Position in life may not be everything, but in your kitchen it’s mighty important. Take the position of an electric refrigerator-freezer, for example. This is your hardest-working kitchen appliance. It performs its job day and night, and it’s the appliance you use most frequently. Having the right unit for your family's needs and positioning it properly in the kitchen can save you considerable time and many tiring steps. But first, be sure your refrigera-tor-freezer is large enough. The average family today chooses a 14-cubic-foot unit, and many who have three or more children, or who entertain frequently, prefer even larger ones. Since the new units have slimmer walls, they offer much more food storage space, often without occupying any more kitchen space. By holding more food and keeping it fresh longer than the older ones, they help you cut down on shopping trips.

Your refrigerator-freezer should be located within a few steps of both the sink and the range. If possible, it should also be reasonably near the outside kitchen entrance, to facilitate putting away the groceries. Be sure there’s counter space next to the refrigerator for unloading your bags of groceries and for holding food as you take it out at mealtime.
It’s a good idea to make the re-frigerator-freezer not only the keynote of your kitchen, but also the focal-point of a complete food storage center, with cal inets and shelves for non-perishables, and pull-out bins for root-vegetables. Narrow shelves, just one can deep, are convenient for canned goods. With its sleek lines and decorator finish, a new electric refrigeratorfreezer with good “position,’’ will give a tired-looking kitchen a fresh, contemporary look, while making it a far more efficient homemaking center for you.

Stock ‘OF in Freezer To Give Family ‘C* Frozen juices are one of the modern conveniences most housewives wisely take advantage of every day. Frozen orange juice, for instance, contains almost as much vitamin C as the fresh juice, providing close to the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C for adults in a fourounce serving. To preserve the vitamin content, frozen juice must be stored at nearzero temperatures sueh as those provided in the zero-zone freezer compartment of a modern electric refrig-erator-freezer. The new units provide generous storage space for a healthy supply of juice, saving shopping trips and guarding vitamin content. CLOSE-QUARTER TIP When a regular saw frame will not fit into a work area requiring a hacksaw cut, split a heavy dowel in half lengthwise. Insert blade and wrap dowel and sandwiched blade with friction tape, to provide a workable temporary handle. NEAT TRICK Suspend small objects to be painted by a string from an overhead support. This provides out-of-the way drying space while allowing rotating while painting all sides.
