SOCIAL SECURITY QUIZ 1. Q. — I do day work for two families. I only work part of a day each week and get paid S3O a quarter for cleaning. Can I add the two amounts to make the SSO I need for a quarter of coverage? A. No. Your work is not covered under the social security program unless you are paid at least SSO by one employer during a quarter for domestic work. 2. Q. — My husband died in 1958. I filed for benefits for my children and myself, but 1 was turned down because my husband didn’t worked long enough. Would there be any cnance of payments now? A. Since 1958. there have been several changes in the amount of work required for benefits to be paid. Your husband would have needed seven quarters of coverage for you to be eligible for benefits. Your social security district office will be able to tell you whether or not you may now receive benefits. 3. Q. — I had to quit work last year because of total disability. I’ve been told that I should file for disability. I haven’t done anything about this because I was afraid that I’d get less at 65 if I got disability payments now. Is this true? A. — No. Disability benefits do not affect a worker’s right to retirement age benefits. As a matter of fact, the amount of your benefit established at the time you become disabled may be higher than it would be if you wait till age 65 and have no earnings between now and then. 4. Q. — I have lost my social security card, but I think I remember the number. It’s not really importand for me to have a card, is it? A.lt’s very important for you to have an account number card. Don't rely on your memory alone. If an incorrect number is used in reporting your wages, you may not get credit. Get an application to replace your lost card from your social security district office. When you go to work, show the card to your employer. Don’t just tell him the number. Be sure that he copies the information correctly. 5. Q. My 12-year-old son has a paper route. Is this covered by social security? A. Work in the delivery of newspapers by employees under age eighteen is not covered under social security. 6. Q. — I am 54 years old and a widow. My husband died last year, and I got a lump sum. I was told that I would get monthly benefits .when I become 62. Now I am disabled. I never worked under social security, but can I get disability payments on his account? A. — No. Disability insurance benefits can be paid* only to disabled workers. In order to receive' benefits on your husband’s account, you must be age 62 if you have. no children eligible for benefits on his account. New York Stock Exchange Price* MIDDAY PRICES A.
