MBS. FREELS HOSTESS TO KIRKLAND LADIES CLUB _ The Kirkland Ladies club met at the home of Mrs. Ralph Freels, Tuesday. The meeting was called . to order by the president, Mrs. Walter Egly. The song leader, Mrs. Jo Baumgardner, read the history of the song of the month, “On the of the Wabash." She led the group in singing the song as well as “The More we Get Together.” The creed was repeated in unison. The devotions, using the scripture, Matthew 13:3, was given by Mrs. Ralph Cauble, who also read the poem, “Heaven’s Song,” by Robert Browning. The health and safety lesson on concer was given by Mrs. Ralph Ross, Jr. A very interesting and informative lesson on flower arrangements was given by Mrs. Elaine Bluhme, assisted by Mrs. Ruby Sprunger. Mrs. Egley conducted the business meeting. Reports were given by both the secretary and the treasurer. A collection, “Pennies for Friendship,” was taken. A rummage sale will be held in the near future. Any dishes, jewelry, or clothing will be accepted for the sale. Roll call was answered by 27 members, and each told her own version of a good spring tonic. The - door prize was won by Mrs. Luther Arnold. Dainty refreshments were servedby the hostess assisted by Mrs. Walter Egly, Mrs. Ralph Cauble and Mrs. August Schlickman. ST. PAUL LADIES AID HAS MEETING Mrs. Lyle Franz was hostess to the members of the St. Paul Ladies aid when they met recently. Mrs. Charles Shoaf conducted the devotions; prayers were given by Mrs. Robert Welch and Mrs. Jack W. Mcßride, and the group sang “Following Jesus”; the scripture was read from Philippians, chapter 4. Plans were made for a motherdaughter banquet. It was also announced about the sacrifice banks which are to be turned in the latter part of May. Plans were made for the ladies to have charge of the morning worship, May 19. The hostess served refreshments during the social hour. the enrollment. Mrs. Dean Baughman, membership chairman, was in charge of the chapter night program. Mrs. Baughman gave a talk on Mooseheart and the advantages of belonging to the Women of the Moose. Following the awarding of the door prize to Anna Myers, a lovely lunch was served by the chairman and her committee. The next regular meeting will be May 16, at 8 p.m. MONROE WSCS HAS MOTHER-DAUGHTER BANQUET The Monroe Methodist Woman’s Society of Christian Service entertained over 20 members and guests at their annual mother-daughter banquet, Thursday evening. They gathered in the sanctuary and the meeting was begun with an organ prelude played by Judy Workinger. Mrs. James Michaels gave the devotions, reading from Mark 6:30-32. She read the poem, “What Task Undone,” and ended with prayer. Mrs. Arlen Mitchel and Mrs. Chester Longenberger sang a duet, “Beautiful Hands.” The president, Mrs. Harry Crownover, read the purpose of the W. S. C. S. and the conscience dues were taken with Judy Workinger at the organ and Margaret Rowden at the piano. The group was dismissed to go to the fellowship hall where a delicious meal had been prepared by the local church activities committee. Table grace was said by Mrs. Russel Mitchel. The welcome was given by Mrs. Darold Borne and the response by her daughter, Carol. A girls' trio, Kathy Michaels, Judy Hirschy and Jane Kaehr, sang two numbers, accompanied at th£ piano by Verna Adler. Following the meal, served by the men of the church, Mrs. Conrad Nagel of Berne* entertained the group with a demonstration of flower arangement and corsage construction. White Bibles were presented to three senior members of the group, Mrs. Martin Hoffman, Mrs. Alfred Burk and Mrs. Vada Walker. Orchid corsages were given to three members who have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries in the last year, Mrs. Martin Hoffman, Mrs. Glen Workinger and Mrs. Otto Longenberger. Also one to Mrs. Claude McCallister, who has a wedding anniversary in the month of May, and one to Judy Workinger for having a birthday nearest to Mother’s day. Mrs. Claude McCallister gave the benediction.
... Jr j y WILL WED — Miss Edna Jean Brewer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rayford L. Brewer, Coos Bay, and James William Boerger, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Boerger, Decatur, are planning an early fall wedding. Miss Brewer, above, a graduate of Marshfield high school, is employed at the U. S. National Bank in Coos Bay. Her fiance is a graduate of Monmouth high school and is serving with the United States Air Force, stationed at the North Bend Air Force station. He is also employed part-time at Shakey’s Pizza parlor and attends Southwestern Oregon College. Before entering the service, he was employed by the Dana Corp., Fort Wayne. “TOPS” CLUB MAY BE ORGANIZED Anyone who might be interested in taking off pounds of weight, in a healthful manner, is asked to call 3-8371, so that a “TOPS” (take off pounds sensibly) club might be formed in Decatur. This is a national organization which has chapters in many cities in the United States; it was founded by Mrs. Esther Manz in 1948. The club studies nutrition and each member receives moral support, in the effort to lose weight, from all other members of the club. EVERREADY CLASS MEETS RECENTLY The Everready Sunday school class of the Methodist church met recently in the parsonage for its May meeting. Mrs. Harry Sipe, opening chairman, announced the hymns, “Stepping in the Light,” ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus,” and led in the opening prayer. Mrs. Paul Edwards led. in devotions, ana chose as her theme, “The Value of Suffering and Faith,” closing witt prayer. The business session was conducted by the president, Mrs. W. P. Robinson. The program chairman, Mrs. H. W. Bixler, read James K. Wallace’s story of the “Shepherd Psalm.” It told of Fernando D’Alfonzo who was a Basque sheepherder, employed by a big Nevada sheep outfit. He was rated as one of the best sheep rangers in the state, for back of him were at least 20 generations of Iberian shepherds. During the social hour, Mrs. Bixler conducted a contest and Mrs. Henry Heller was presented a prize for giving the most correct answers. Twenty-four members

Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Stevens, of Fort Wayne, visited friends in Decatur Saturday. Ben Shell of 909 North Eleventh St., will celebrate his 80th birthday Tuesday. Shell has been active until the last couple weeks when he has been indisposed because of an attack of influenza. Mr. and Mrs. Wade Mcßarnes, 340 North Tenth St., observed their 56th wedding anniversary Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Robinson returned home Saturday, after spending a week in Minneapolis, Minn., where they attended the 48th annual meeting of the American association of cereal chemists. Enroute home, they stopped for two days in the Dells of Wisconsin. Miss Karlo Stavenik, a graduate of Virginia Farrell beauty school, Detroit, Mich., is spending a few days at home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs'. William Stavenik, Monroe. She will return Sunday for a five-week advanced training in hair styling and permanent waving at the Virginia Farrell Academy. When finished, she will work full-time ’ at the mother’s shop. Mrs. Herman Hendricks and son, David, of Gary, were dinner guests, Sunday, of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie A. McFarland, route 6. Mr. and Mrs. Dorrie Morin and family, Fort Wayne, were Sunday guests of Mrs. Morin’s mother, Mrs. Jack Shaw. # , Dennis Harpring, of route 2. Geneva, was dismissed Friday from the Clinic hospital. Mr. and Mrs, W. A. KJepper, left Saturday afternoon for Honolulu, Hawaii, byway of La s Vegas, Nev., for a vacation. They plan to visit with Lt. and Mrs. Gene Baxter while in Hawaii. Paul W. Moser, of route 2, Geneva, has been admitted to the Jay county hospital. Donald Wolverton, of Geneva, has been dismissed from the Jay county hospital.
The meetings Os the WSCS circles. of the First Methodist church, which were to have been held May 9, have been postponed until May 16. The change has been made bpcause of the officers’ training day which will be held in Geneva. All officers must attend the meeting, which begins at 10 a.m., with a sack lunch at noon. The Business and Professional Women's club will meet at the Community center, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Beverly Trout and Janice Kauffman are co-chairmen of the dinner meeting, assisted by Mary Jane Burnett, Shirley Schnepp, Agnes Kenney and Helen Kenney. Mrs. Sherman Stucky will present a talk, after the dinner, on mental health. Members are to bring their donations for the blind auction to be conducted by the finance committee. There will also be installation of officers. -to The Pleasant Mills high school annual alumni banquet will be held in the school gymnasium Saturday at 7 p.m. The class of 1938 will be honored on their silver anniversary. Reservations must be in not later than May 8, Wednesday, with Mrs. Ben McCullough, Decatur, route 6, or Williamson’s Marathon station. Pleasant Mills. Adams unit 43 of the American Legion auxiliary will meet in the Legion home, Friday at 8 p.m. This will be a business meeting.
