Make it from ordinary sound redwood or western red cedar lumber, which will last for many years when exposed to the weather. Two inch dimension lumber is adequate for the job. and most carpenters can build it from pretty rough plans. You can line it with non-corrosive materials, but you need not if you use either redwood or cedar.

2VEIZ4 Seal Is Guide To Comfort In many parts of the country, spring is spotted with un-spring-like, uncomfortably warm days. One way to get a jump on unseasonable weather and to be prepared for the dog days that follow is to buy apd install a room air conditioner as early as possible. There are other advantages to pre-season buying: there’s ample time-to shop carefully and to wait, if necessary, for the specific model that meets a family’s air conditioning needs most specifically; there’s time to arrange for professional installation of larger window units and through-the-wall models. Home owners and apartment dwellers can get help from appliance dealers in making the right choice of a room air conditioner. A dealer will want to know the size and exposure of the area to be air conditioned. the number and size of windows. and whether there is insulation, the use made of the room and the type of electric circuits—lls or 230 volts. Today, a family can be sure of getting the cooling capacity he pays for because of a.unique certification program sponsored by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. Under this program, the electrical characteristics and cooling capacities (in British thermal units per hour) of room air conditoners are tested and verified by an independent laboratory. Approximately 92 per cent of all room air conditioners manufactured for sale in this country are included in the certification program for 1963. This covers more than 1,000 models marketed under 41 brand names. Each certified unit carries the NEMA certification seal. Most dealers have a director which lists each model and its officially certified cooling capacity--- Check the date of the directory to make sure it contains current listings.

With New Cooler, Chic Decor Stays, Discomfort Goes KiHandsome cabinet screens sight and sound of new room air conditioner. Cool air flows from top. Sacrificing decor for the sake of comfort is a thing of the past, now that room air conditioners have “gone compact.” Like today’s radios, television sets, and automobiles, the new electric room air conditioners are smaller on the outside, more efficient on the inside. Slimmer and trimmer, they fit almost flush with window or wall inside, yet the mechanism has been improved to cool, dehumidify, and filter the air better than ever. New color, styling and more attractive grille designs blend with the decor of a room. Window units available today are easier to install as well as more attractive. Some have built-in adapters that slide out to fit any window and mounts that make installation a job the average horhe owner can do. Through-the-wall electric room air conditioners appeal to families building or remodeling a house. They offer a choice of location in the room, leaving windows free. The outer, weather-proofed section becomes an integral part of the house. To tie a package more securely, dampen the cord before wrapping it around the package. The cord will shrink and tighten as it dries.
Everyone Relaxes ‘Nippers’ Like to Nap i In Cool, Quiet Room I * il.‘ < ■ K<9 I ■ l‘ W • * B*L w. .Mi gk ■ IeIShH Kpr ’’ • T Bl I- vJK 1 '"'K * ■ Here'* a nifty setting for a very young lady’* summer afternoon nap. With curtain* drawn, windows closed for quiet, and the air cooled and dehumidified, even Raggedy Ann and Andy will, have trouble keeping their shoe-button eye* open very long.
If getting little nippers to take their naps is a special summertime problem at your house, try installing a room air conditioner. Many parents have found the cool, humidity-controlled environment provided by a modern room air conditioner works wonders in helping youngters fall asleep-and stay asleep. They awake truly refreshed because they haven’t wasted most of their nap time tossing and turning. In addition to providing cool comfort, a room air conditioner also makes it practical to close the windows and draw the shades. This blocks out both disturbing outdoor sounds and light. This can also be important on summer evenings because there usually is still plenty of light as well as noisy outdoor activity when the younger children call it a day. A brief nap, particularly during the summer, is a sound idea for mothers, toq, according to psychologists. A refreshing respite in an BI-
Teens Take to Cool Playroom
A playroom can be a big help in keeping teenagers off the streets, many families h»-e found. It doesn’t have to be fancy, either. In fact; the more casual and functional playroom furnishings are the better. A phonograph is standard equipment in most playrooms, but a television set, snack bar and table tennis are other popular items. Although a playroom can be enjoyed all year Jong, many parents feel it’s particularly important in summer when school is out and the youngsters have time on their hands. At this time of year, a playroom’s attractiveness can be doubled if it’s
Air Conditioners More Efficient, Work Quietly Wherever you live-in an apartment or a house, in the city or the country—you can take the simmer out of summer with the new easy-to-install room air conditioners. This year’s models are quieter yet more efficient than ever, thanks to extensive research and the resulting improvements in design. Air conditioner noise is caused primarily by the intake and discharge of air through the units and by the movement of the fan in pushing -against the air. Ip the 1963 room air conditioners, the patterns of air flow through the vents have been changed and the pitch of the fan blades modified to reduce friction and noise. The new units have two and three fan speeds which can be adjusted to cooling requirements. A bedroom unit can be operated r‘. a slpwer, quieter speed since peak cooling capacity is not needed at night’ This is important to keep in mind if you're going to cool a large area in your home, since it may be better to use two or more room air conditioners with small capacities, correctly positioned, rather than a single large unit. The noise level will be lower and the cooling just as efficient, if not more so.
